Another Round of DAN "RATHERISMS"
MediaResearchCenter ^ | 10.06.2002 | Brent Baker

Posted on 11/06/2002 8:24:27 AM PST by fight_truth_decay

It wouldn't be election night without some wacky "Ratherisms" or, if you prefer, "Danisms." Here are the ones we observed from the CBS Evening News through the end of CBS's 10pm EST hour. MRC analyst Patrick Gregory tracked down most of them:

> Opening the November 5 CBS Evening News: "CBS News has assembled an experienced team of correspondents to bring you the returns and analysis tonight. And we could be in for a long night with the Senate battle as tight as a botox smile."

> During 9pm EST two minute update before Judging Amy. -- "Two hands worth of white knucklers still hanging ten."

-- And, on the Arkansas Senate race: "Polls closed one half hour ago in Arkansas. We can tell you that race is crackling like a hickory fire."

> During CBS's EST/CST prime time hour at 10pm EST: -- "Georgia now is colored red. What a big win for the Republicans. And they'll be breaking out the longnecks in Republican headquarters in Texas and elsewhere, not to mention the White House itself, although Lesley says they pop the caps only on Doctor Pepper ten two and four there."

-- "Well Bob certainly as recently as a week or ten days ago, the Republicans would have considered this kind of win in Georgia as a situation somewhat like the cat that finds a mouse in the milk: unexpected but very much appreciated."

-- "Now, we'll be back with more of our election coverage, and it's beginning to get exciting as the Democrats' fingernails are beginning to sweat now, so stick in here with us, we'll have more after this break."

-- "If, Bob, if it turns out that Republicans regain control of the Senate, and thus President Bush has the White House, both houses of Congress, and a very substantial majority on the U.S. Supreme Court, would or would it not be too strong to say that this night has been the 'Bushification' of America?" Schieffer gave in: "You could say that."

> Depending on what happens on the morning shows, late this afternoon I may do another CyberAlert on what evaluations are espoused on them.

-- Brent Baker, with the overnight team of Brad Wilmouth and Patrick Gregory

MRC NOTE:Editor's Note: The lack of exit polling data and the delay beyond prime time EST of definitive numbers for many races, inhibited trend analysis from TV journalists and pundits on election night, making way for rather dry and straight-forward coverage of returns. But there were some exceptions in the coverage from the cable networks all night and the 10pm EST hour from ABC, CBS and NBC, as well as the 10pm PST/1am EST hours from ABC and NBC. Washington, DC's CBS affiliate did not carry the 10pm PST/1am EST hour from CBS News and significant portions of the 10pm EST hours on the broadcast networks were interrupted by local coverage.

Looked for Rush..but local polling accounts and normal programming (with the satellite vs local news programming prevented me from alot national network news ..so used Fox.) Guess they knew Rush would not get national exposure but would paint themselves with a "quick stroke of the brush" unbiased coverage.

I'm guessing that only in many of the smaller markets did ABCBSNBC's national election reporting actually get carried by the local affiliates. There were TONS of races across the country, and I'd just GUESS that MOST of the affiliates didn't take the net at all for the entire evening.

Here in Nashville, the local affiliates didn't take ANY national coverage.

LOL. I heard that one too. I was thinking What the heck does that mean? I also heard another one about Colorado. Something to the effect if the Republicans win that one it's 'Saynora, see ya, goodbye'

Maybe CBS should hire George Will to revivie "Meet the Press" and hire Ann Coulter as their news anchor.

Look . . . A RAT in the milk! Now isn't that just the most heartwarming image you could imagine? (Well, Dan Rather thinks so.)

and a very substantial majority on the U.S. Supreme Court

I was unaware that the SC had party affiliations. I guess Blather knows more about government than I do.

Ten, two and four may be the answers to that famous question: "What's the frequency Kenneth?"

I believe this is a kind of weeping:

"It's "depressing" to Bill Maher, the ex-host of ABC's cancelled Politically Incorrect, that President Bush is "so popular when he has really done so little" to fight terrorism."

"It was a "frightening" prospect to former NBC News reporter Star Jones that Kathleen Kennedy Townsend might lose her gubernatorial bid."

"Peter Jennings to Washington Democratic Senator Patty Murray during ABC's 1am EST/10pm PST hour: "Senator from your perspective, ie the Democratic perspective, if the Republicans do end up with control of the Senate, what would worry you most?" Murray's answer: "People would feel there's no one here fighting for them."

Michel Martin, a regular now on This Week, during a discussion in the 1am EST hour about why Kathleen Kennedy Townsend lost in Maryland: "But they also had these leaflets passed out in African- American neighborhoods implying that you couldn't vote if you hadn't paid your rent, if you hadn't paid your overdue tickets, and people are calling this an example of the kind of voter suppression tactics that Republicans engage in..."

The old Dr.Pepper bottles had a round emblem with the numbers 10, 2 and 4 in the positions that they would be in on a clock. That was their old trade-mark.

Acctually, it is pretty clever. Dr. Pepper was originally bottled in Texas (Waco, where the Dr. Pepper museum is), and is still a Texas "thing."

One of their old advertising slogans was "Pepper up at 10, 2, and 4." (Drink a Dr. Pepper at 10:00am, 2:00pm and 4:00pm -- traditional break times in factories.)

Dubya is a teetotaler -- hence he pops the caps only on Doctor Pepper. (Although it could be tea or Coke in actuality.

Rather has again demonstrated that while he comes from the Johnson/Richards stream of politics, he originally came from Texas.

10, 2, and 4 are numbers that appear on the traditional Dr. Pepper bottle, indicating the suggested times of the day to enjoy a drink.
