Gov. James E. McGreevey cast himself as an unabashed champion of gun control last year. He made the topic one of the linchpins of his campaign against Republican gubernatorial candidate Bret Schundler and pledged to enact a first-in-the-nation law to require "smart gun" technology on all handguns sold in New Jersey.

Bret Schundler was a pro-2nd Amendment, Republican Gubernatorial Candidate. He was supported by most 2nd-Amendment enthusiasts. Now, we see the sneaky truth behind the election. In a closed-door decision and by manipulating voter scorecards, the NRA surreptitiously endorsed a man who, while State Senator, voted for a ban on automatic rifles, all because Schundler was behind in the polls.

The NRA may have to eat their words since a smart gun bill was recently passed.

Well, actually they weren't fooled. What I suspect is this:
Schundler was 20 points down, so the NRA figured to make a deal with McSleazy saying we won't endorse you; however, what we will do is increase your rating from an F to a C- and we won't endorse Schundler. And in return you won't sign anymore gun control legislation.

I hope the plan backfires on both sides. I will call the NRA scumbags tomorrow.

HMMM! I'm still thinking about it.

I did find it very surprising to read that the bill had been snuffed in committee, led by the efforts of one of its original co-sponsors. Here I was thinking that people had actually come to their senses of their own accord (naive, I know...) but after reading this, who knows?

I was also under the impression that being for all kinds of gun control was a sure winner in this state, and that being against the NRA was a badge of honor. Politics is a strange bird.

We had NJ featured on TakeBackCongress.org until the polls got so far apart that NJ cannot be fairly characterized as a "tight" race. TakeBackCongress.org is only featuring the tight races.

If you know of any good, recent, independent polls that suggest that Lautenberg's lead is less than 5-6% (ie, within or just outside the MOE), please let me know. I would love to be able to call that race tight.

In a notice to its members after the election, the NRA called McGreevey a "middle-of-the-road candidate when it comes to firearms."

This tells you everything you need to know about the LaPierre/Heston clique that runs the NRA. Heston was STILL bragging about "probably being the American MOST RESPONSIBLE for getting a reluctant President to sign GCA-68 into law." AFTER he was elected president of the NRA.

GCA-68 is the Gun Control Act of 1968. Congress had passed it,but it was sitting on the presidents desk unsigned. Heston went to the White House and talked him into signing it into law,and bragged about it.
