A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day....10-25-02

A Few of FR's Finest.....
......Every Day

FR is a Treasure Trove of talented, compassionate, patriotic, wonderful people who gather every day to discuss the latest news and issues;  salute
and support our military and our leaders;  tell a few jokes;  learn a new
word;  write poetry;  pray for those in need;  and congratulate those who
are deserving. Thank you, Jim Robinson, for giving us the vehicle in which
we can express ourselves.

Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.  I
can remember lurking when there were only a few regulars who posted, and now there are over 60,000 who have registered for posting privileges. The forum is read daily by tens of thousands
of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.

A Few of FR's Finest November 11, 2001

So many people have written me since my original Veteran's Day Tribute, asking how they, or a loved one, could be included in that tribute. Since I can no longer add the photos to the body of the thread, I've been including them in additional posts as I received enough to make another collage.

Still that doesn't seem to be enough. I think there's never been a better nor more appropriate time to keep the faces of our own Veterans and Active Military in front of FReepers--every day! That's why I wanted to do yet another Daily Thread .....ABOUT FReepers .....and FOR FReepers. But not only about our Military FReepers; for all FReepers! Wouldn't it be nice to get to know a few of the other FReepers as well? That's why, in addition to seeing FR's Finest Military Personnel every day, I thought it might be fun to feature a different FReeper (or FReepers) each day. If you would like to be pictured, or know someone who would, please FReepmail me and we'll turn the spotlight - on YOU - for the day!

And do let me know if you'd like your picture added to the groups of Veterans/Active Military below. I will keep this page updated, and continue to add them to the comment section of the original Veteran's Day thread as well.

Petuniasevan started posting the Astronomy Picture of the Day in March 2002. She thought it would be a great way to introduce interested FReepers to the wonders of the universe. She obtains the links for this thread from NASA.

Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. Petuniasevan adds an Astronomy Fun Fact. She pings interested FReepers to the thread and provides additional commentary. leads discussions and answers questions.

Petuniasevan has suggested the following as memorable APOD's.
October 18 2002
March 24 2002
April 24 2002
June 10 2002
July 20 2002
August 24 2002
September 23 2002

Freeper since 12-14-00

Petuniasevan is from California but she is currently living in Wisconsin with her husband, FReeper poorman.

Petuniasevan became interested in astronomy at an early age and got her first telescope at age six. Currently, she is telescope-deprived but plans to remedy that within a couple of years. She is comparing 'scopes and window shopping.

Favorite threads on FR (besides APOD) are: A Day in the Life of President Bush, (she is a Bush Bot and a distant cousin of the Bush family), veteran-oriented threads, and humor threads (she's on the HMB ping list). She works rotating shifts so it's hard to "hang out" at any of the regular threads, but if her schedule permitted, she would "hang out"at the Daily Dose.

"WI FReeper Get Together"

Petuniasevan and poorman coordinated and organized a WI FReeper get-together at the Prime Quarter Steak House in Appleton WI this past Spring. As with most FReeper social events, everyone enjoyed each other's company and discussed FR activism, politics, ongoing projects, as well as personal hobbies and interests. A good time was had by all.

"Military Service"

Petuniasevan proudly served in the U.S. Air Force 1984-1988 as an aircraft mechanic (B-52G Bombers) at Barksdale AFB, Louisiana. The patches show are, left to right, Air Force Strategic Air Command, Air Force 2nd Bomb Wing. and Air Force 2nd Organizational Maintenance Squadron.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY, PETUNIASEVAN.

"Just for Fun"

Petuniasevan's webpage has a neat link to over 100 smiley faces and over 100 bumper stickers. It can be accessed through her Profile Page. For a rollicking good time, take a look.

CONGRATULATIONS PETUNIASEVAN

     3) In the next box enter your name in the "Calendar Text" field and then click on submit.
     4) If any of the screens fail to load simply click on refresh in your browser and that will usually fix it.

I'm not sure it's working Lady. This has been a very frustrating day with FR being down and going all wobbly on us.

Hi LadyX!

.45MAN isn't up to being online tonight, so I'm answering for him.

He was stationed at Elmendorf near Anchorage 1963-5. As far as the big earthquake, it scared the "bejeebers" out of all of them. He recounts of how about a year later he was walking down a street in Anchorage after much of the damage was repaired. All of a sudden, the street rose up in front of him and rippled towards him like a wave (one of many, many aftershocks). He had spent most of the night at a bar, but said that experience really sobered him up in a hurry! LOL!

The U-2 story sure was frightening. .45MAN said that most of that activity was out of Eielson and not Elmendorf, so he's not as familiar with it.

He loves to recall going horseback riding during one of the endless winter "nights." .45MAN says that there are no words to describe the complete silence and solitude. It sounds wonderful.....

Thank-you for sharing your experiences with us! Someday, we definitely need a face-to-face!

Looks as if we might be back on line, if somewhat slow.

I want to quickly say congratulations to Petuniasevan before FR crashes again. We hope you come back often Petunia

Hi. I've finally found time to reply like you keep telling me to do. I really like your astronomy pix and messages. By reading your posts, you seem to know not only about astronomy, but other sciences as well. A lot more than I know. I have a normal size chemistry text and a HUGE biology text: It makes "WAR AND PEACE" look like "PAT THE BUNNY". I'm not much of a reader, especially books like that, but I should try. I can't wing it, like I could in English class last year. I'm doing poorly at trig, but I must get at least a C in it to take physics. Ps. This is NOT an ultra-left wing university like some, but a few professors are lefties.

What's happening to the thread? It's going all weird on me.

Uhhh, I guess I'm to blame. I defragged my puter and the next thing I know, it's allllll messed up.

My 'puter's running better though. :^)

Hi graycamel. Glad you dropped by. Petunia hasn't been here since FR came back online. She may be working. Please feel welcome to stay around. Sounds like you are taking some heavy duty courses there. I never had a course in Trig., but I did take Physics and made an A. But it will be a lot easier if you do take the Trig. As for reading, it takes practice. You can develop a love for reading by reading things that interest you. And, when you are reading something "heavy" keep reminding yourself that when you get through it you will know something that 80% of your friends don't know. Just think how inpressive you will be when you converse with others (g). That's advice from a grandma who loves to read.

You got that right. I hated living in Atlanta. The only good thing that happened there was the conception of my youngest child. He was born in Jackson, Miss., thank God.

Good evening Libertina. Sounds like you had a busy, yet very rewarding and important, day. I once volunteered in a Spec. Ed. classroom for several months. The teacher was so appreciative of my help and I still think about some of the kids I met there.

ROTFLOL. I knew it had to be your fault Dave. I told everybody who would listen that Diver Dave had probably taken his puter under water to clean it up and Free Republic was water logged. I was right too. It's taken hours for it to dry out.
