My guess is the weapon was stolen from the military,that is why the ballistics were so easy to match.You connect the theft of the weapon with who had access,and who might have motive. Add in the descriptions,(which they kept real quiet, except the bogus ones, they let the disinformation fly) and bingo this guy is on the radar screen.

Apparently, the cops found a gun in the car in which they were arrested. Thence, the weapons charge.
