From the Sudan to Indonesia is not a few tribes. The only thing the many countries where it is practiced have in common is Islam.

Not true. I know a man from the Christian part of Nigeria, Emmanuel Babatunde. He is Catholic, his tribe is Catholic or animist. He has written a book, Women's Rites versus Women's Rights, describing the FGM ceremonies in his tribe, in which he participated as a youngster. They were never Muslim. The practice came from the tribal belief that it would ensure fertility.

Not true. Female mutilation also is practiced by many Christians in Africa.
