A killer is on the loose in the Washington area, and once again, gun haters are using the Beltway shootings as an excuse for more gun control.
Ballistic fingerprinting will hardly ever solve a crime, but it will accomplish something else -- a gun registry tied to the owners of the guns.
The latest weapon in the gun haters' arsenal is the registration of firearms. Specifically, they want to register the unique "ballistic fingerprint" that each firearm leaves on a bullet or cartridge case after it is fired, and trace it back to the original buyer of the gun.
Ballistic fingerprinting will not work for a number of reasons. Probably foremost is that crooks do not use valid identification to buy guns in stores. That means the evidence chain will rarely connect back to the crook.
Second, the signature changes with successive firings of the gun. The changes are most pronounced when the gun is new. Moreover, it is not difficult to intentionally disfigure the lands and grooves in the barrel to change the signature.
Third, barrels and firing pins can be replaced, creating a new signature that does not exist in anybody's database.
Gun owners oppose registration because governments have a habit of changing the rules at some future date and using the database of gun owners to demand surrender of the newly banned guns. This is what happened in New York City.
For 25 years, all rifles and shotguns were registered. The city's politicians insisted that crime fighting, not confiscation, was the goal. Then the law was changed, and many of the previously legal guns were on the prohibited list. Those that were not surrendered were confiscated during raids on owners' homes using registration lists.
Opposition to registration is hardly the paranoia that gun control supporters want people to believe. Often these same gun control advocates are (rightly) suspicious of the government when Fourth Amendment rights, rather than Second Amendment rights, are involved.
Many supporters of gun control (rightly) opposed the Patriot Act and Attorney General John Ashcroft's inability to limit his actions within constitutional boundaries. They do not call themselves paranoid when opposing the Patriot Act, which authorizes massive invasions of personal privacy. However, they call gun owners paranoid for opposing registration.
Some proponents of keeping a registry of bullet signatures insist that this is not gun control, just a crime tool. If you study the debates over every piece of gun control legislation in the past, you will find the same argument being made.
Gun control has always been advanced as just crime control. But gun control costs lives, it does not save them.
The rise in gun violence in the US has only one statistically significant direct correlation: the rise in the number of gun LAWS.
Another correlation: The amount of anti-RKBA chatter by the editorial Left.
Procure your weapons second hand....from private parties and prepare the cache you might just need it.
Another form of registration......In colorado if you carry concealed...with a permit you are in the registry and cops get downright belligerent with people who have permits.....plus if you are stopped the law officer is notified that you have a permit. And generally only law abiding citizens would register their weapons anyway.
Any politician that tries to pass laws over the whole nation, based on the actions of a nut, is a running scared idiot or a cheap opportunist, trying to turn the tragedy of others to their gain. We will always have nuts.

Felons don’t register guns. Felons will always get guns Bad guys are felons with guns.
Robbers love to rob citizens without guns and with government trigger locks. Robbers do not fear police with guns. Rapists prefer to rape women without guns.
Robbers select big food chains to hit because corporate policy does not allow mgrs to carry guns. Robbers avoid small mom and pop food stores because they know these storeowners are armed and robbers might get killed.
Robber breaking in – dial 911 require 5-15 minutes for police to arrive --- 5 seconds to arm yourself. If you don’t have gun? Do you have a plan?
Gun Control advocates should post sign on their lawns, “home is gun free”. These miss-guided advocates would soon miss the umbrella that 57 million gun owners provide.
“Fear in felons mind”. Gun Control grabbers advocates should visit daily high crime neighbors and wear T- Shirts “they are unarmed”. This will sharpen their focus and fear of assault, robbery, murder shared by citizens live in these neighbors.
75,000,000 gun owners only have one question for gun control grabbers & advocates. If a bad guy puts a knife to your chest, and I have my gun, Do you want me to shoot the bad guy or not?
Felons will always have guns. 20,000 current gun laws have not stopped felons from having guns, or stop humans from killing humans.
States with Conceal Carry laws CCW have experienced significant drop in contract crime to citizens. Serious Contact Crime has dropped in 95 % of the states.
In 1986 seven states had CCW, today 43 states have CCW and crimes continues to drop in these states. Support HR 407 bill for national CCW in all 50 states.
43 STATES ALLOW CONCEALED CARRY WEAPONS FOR CITIZENS. New York and Hawaii almost impossible to obtain permit (no one meet requirements) and they are experiencing no significant decline in crime.
