Here's some examples of Tarot Death cards (sorry if this posting offends any for religious reasons). I thought it would be interesting to see these. I don't remember the card the media has been displaying, so I don't know if the one they have been displaying is the exact example of the one used, or if it's just an example of a death card:

I think a reporter mentioned a "crusader". So it looks like it would be your first pic. Come to think of it, if the Tarot card is more than a gimmick, then maybe their initiation rite consists in killing XIII (13) people..?
