The trajectory would point to the matted area. The case could have been a plant but the damage would point to the type of damage a 5.56/.223 would cause. If there's a cannelure around the bullet, the cartrdge could only be 5.56/.223. That "someone else" matting down the area and leaving clues the night before would have been the killer.

The trajectory MIGHT point to where the hit was made from except I don't think anyone knows EXACTLY how the kid was positioned when he was hit. Either someone had good instincts and checked out the greenspace or we have some witnesses who had a good idea on where the shot came from...or who knows??
