This report by not distingishing between mass killers and serial killers does little to shed light on the current situation. Serial killers seem possess a higher intelligence and act to avoid detection while mass killers act out of desperation to make their grievances know and frequently end up killing themselves during the single act of mass murder.

I agree, this person would be a serial killer, not a mass killer.

The thing that strikes me is the frequency of the attacks. It seems to me that serial killers that go on a spree of some sort are usually "disorganized", and are not usually concerned all that much with evading capture. They are usually delusional, and caught fairly quickly because of their mistakes.

"Organized" serial killers would be too circumspect to kill so many so quickly, knowing that it would increase the likelihood of capture, if only by dumb luck. Berkowitz and the Zodiac didn't knock of 6-7 in a few days. Organized killers nearly always get a satisfaction (sexual, power or otherwise) from the killings, which lasts a while. They kill again when they need their fix. This guy isn't giving himself any time to "enjoy" it.

With so many crime scenes, if this guy was "disorganized" he most certainly would have been caught by now, unless he actually has left a lot of evidence at the scenes that the police have chosen not to tell us about. But even then, he probably would have been caught running a red light with a gun in his car or something.

But as an organized killer, I just don't see him taking the risk of so many attacks so quickly in public. What is the reward? He isn't even giving himself time to sit back and enjoy the fear of the public and the failure of the police. That is a big part of the Berkowitz and Zodiac cases, which I feel are the most similar among the "famous" cases. Both of those even felt compelled to communicate with the public as a way to build the "high."

This guy seems to have the uncontrolled compulsion of a disorganized killer and the circumspection of an organized killer, that is what confuses me.

That is what makes me think that this is either a "cause" killer, Islamic or otherwise, or something relatively new.
