Democrats’ Fortunes Unraveling? Torricelli case just one scene in what could be a real nightmare
MSNBC/Newsweek ^ | 10/2/02 | Howard Fineman

Posted on 10/02/2002 1:50:49 PM PDT by Jean S

Oct. 2 — Angelo Genova is one shrewd dude. As the Democrats’ top election lawyer in New Jersey, he has to be. He was the star of a conference call with reporters the other day, calmly marshalling his party’s arguments about why someone (turns out to be Frank Lautenberg), should be allowed to replace Robert Torricelli as the Democratic candidate for Senate in New Jersey. The more interesting question is: Why are the Democrats reduced to relying on the Genovas of the world to survive an election season in which they should be thriving?

FOR DEMOCRATS, this fall is beginning to feel like a nightmare from which they can’t wake up. If you look at national poll numbers, Democrats would seem poised to gain seats in Congress. But with a month to go until Election Day, the gathering consensus here is that Republicans will be the net winners on Nov. 5. The White House’s Iraq-around-the-clock strategy (which emphasizes President Bush’s popularity as commander-in-chief) is one reason. But, to a greater degree than Democrats want to admit, their problems are of their own making.

Some of the prominent Democrats running for president don’t seem eager to take him on frontally, either. Most support a war against Iraq; few are in favor of a sweeping cancellation of the Bush tax cut; few are advocating any Big Think solutions.

I'd like to change that to something more factually accurate, like "Big Starve" or "Big Lie" solutions.

Here in Missouri, we have the "Big Rob Social Security" lie by the Carnahan campaign since she does not have a single idea to vote for her. Maybe thats whats killing the democrats - they don't have one good idea for the election. I still say that the dems are engaged in pre-911 thinking and its killing them. They act as if 3000 Americans did'nt die.

I know FR lost the lawsuit. But mark me up as one who thinks that having to excerpt sucks. These other sites are so slow to load.

makes it harder for them to overcome the luck of the draw
Luck of the draw? My God, how many Republican Senate seats are up for election this time as compared to incumbent Democrat seats?

Luck of the draw my ass.

Help me. I recall the lawsuit was LA Times, and Washington Post, right? So what does MSNBC/Newsweek got to do with it?

Newsweek is owned by the Washington Post.

Click on the article, scroll to the bottom, and notice the "writes for the Washington Post Group" notification.

Oh, and click the link to rate the article. Give it a good high rating so it gets more views on MSNBC.

Agreed. The real democrat agenda and the ostensible one every two years are entirely different. Take Cleland of Georgia. He represents a conservative state and is one of the harder left guys in the Senate.

The reason they get away with this is that the media will not call them on it. So we have to.

You are right the widow has no ideas of her own so she tries the old Rat lines. They don't seem to be working this time. Also have you noticed that the widow has zero political presense. Her TV spots have no impact in my view. GO TALENT!!!!!!!!

I think Howard also misses a bigger point, that the dims are misreading what the American people want. We want a safer world, and without that, prescription drug coverage etc, is worthless.

Exactly. This is true about the economy, too. Doesn't matter is you are unemployed or if your 401K has lost value if you are dead.

get a cable modem or DSL...well worth the extra cost and it will drop in price as more people get them.

I paid $24.95 for my dial up ISP....now I pay $39.95 for cable modem. Well worth the extra $15 a month!
