Laura Bush confident in Mexico-U.S. immigration agreement

EFE - 9/26/2002

U.S. First Lady Laura Bush said she was convinced an immigration agreement could be reached between Mexico and the United States, because their leaders want it.

Mrs. Bush, who participated in the 11th Conference of the Wives of Heads of State and Government in Mexico City on Wednesday, said, "I do see a solution to this problem."

In statements to the Mexican press made in Washington and published Wednesday in Reforma daily, Laura Bush explained she and her husband had lived in Texas for many years and have a special sensitivity for the problems of the U.S. Hispanic community.

"There are so many stories about immigrants and the children of immigrants in the United States. Our whole country is made up of immigrants who were able to overcome poverty and obtain good jobs. There are many examples in my husband's administration," the first lady noted.

Mrs. Bush acknowledged that the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks had set back the agenda between Mexico and the United States, but insisted that Presidents Bush and Fox "are going to meet again to try to revitalize and refocus the issue of immigration."

The first lady said she felt "a special bond with Mexico" and recalled the couple had spent their honeymoon in Mexico City and the Caribbean resort of Cozumel. The first lady is expected to focus on childhood poverty as she participates in this summit.

"As someone who sees their area being overtaken by recent arrivals from Mexico, I'm tired of having to speak Spanish just to get a stinking burger in McD's. And I live in No. VA. It's insane. We have to close our borders. NOW!"

I"m "inside the beltway" and am unable to communicate with the gardeners but to go to the store I have to speak largely Arabic. It seems to me we have more mosques being built than churches and while churches are voted down in city councils the mosques seem to get the go-ahead "like magic".

I wonder why the Laura's don't understand that all her Texas neighbors do not have protection from the SS.

PRND21, let's face it, you aren't interested...

So nothing specific? Just a general dislike of other opinions?

I think sweetliberty tagged you well as a "Jerk"

Do a little search and see if you can find out why he's calling names.
You fellas angrily don't answer questions.

" I would think our veterans and seniors would be a priority, if there is a need for assistance."

You would think. Well, the seniors ARE a priority for the Rats at election time. But that's about it. The vets in the past 30 years have been largely ignored it seems. I am hoping to see that change. We once took care of those who answered the call of duty to protect our country.

I would like to see an improvement to V.A. hospitals. I don't think that's socialist or an un-due waste of tax money. At the very least--admit to and compensate families when their loved ones are exposed to battlefield agents that reduce their life expectancy.

" I don't like illegals, be they Mexicans, or Martians. I don't want them here period. I don't care how good of workers or people they are. They have broken the laws and are stealing from the American people."

This is the concept that so many racebaiters can't seem to grasp.

"The Pawnee and Cherokee and Comanche weren't know to love the white man..."

The Pawnee and Comanche were brutal beyond all need to defend themselves. The Comanche, as well as several other plains tribes made it a sport to yearly head for the mountains to make war on the more civilized Ute and Paiute. They later did this to the white settlers as well and the stories of the brutal massacres in the area are plentiful.

The Cherokee made more of an effort to adapt and early on intermarried with the settlers and adopted many of the white man's ways. They were enterprising and performed the same jobs as the white man as well, from blacksmith to tailor to storekeeper. They were literate and had a written language. Many were even slave owners. Those who were assimilated by the white culture were spared the fate of many of their Cherokee brethren and their descendents of mixed ancestry are many.

Methinks some phone answering droid took your name, address/etc and then just noted ..245(i) next to it. While Bush was on vacation, he caught up with correspondence and since your name was on a 245(i) list you got a letter...

Either that or there's a droid at the WH that disapproves of 245(i) and put your name on the list to garner attention to its still impending passage.

Any ladies want to stick their necks out and talk about the unmentionable?

I, as well as every female who lives in my apartment building, can sadly attest that you speak the truth.

Bush needs to receive a strong message that his immigration stance will cost him reelection. What is the best way to send that message?

One possibility is a "Draft Tancredo for President" movement.

Any other ideas?

"Thank God Chick-fil-A doesn't hire illegals. At least they have America's best interests at heart, are closed on Sunday's, pass out Veggie Tales books and toys in the kids meals, and give back to the community through college scholarships and the like."

Yes, I admire that about them, and they are highly successful considering the markets they compete for. I eat there whenever I have the opportunity. One question I have though, do they buy from Tyson?

It seems "predatory", but I think it's either mindless "aping" or meant to intimidate. But I know many women who just plain ole don't LIKE it.
If you feel intimidated, some self defense training is a great confidence booster and could save your life. SAS (Second Amendment Sisters) has a great website:

If the Cherokee had defended their territories like the Comanche did the settlers would have had to be a little more honest in their land dealings. Perhaps slavery wouldn't have become as entrenched in as large an area as it did. Nothing against the ancestors. But, the Comanche and Apache have weapons of war named after them. The Cherokee have an SUV. Hmmmmm...

BTW, www.badeagle.com is pretty cool if you haven't been there...

Yes. In this wonderful world of diverse cultures we're seeking to install in the US we must remember, they don't all view Women and Womanhood in the same way. I'm thrilled to know we're importing so many people from cultures I'd call women hating. yay.

That's probably it. This WH is so far removed from its constituency it wouldn't surprise me if they automatically assume that anyone who writes to the President about Amnesty is writing in support of it.
