NEW YORK (Dow Jones/AP) -- African-Americans are 50 percent more likely to try to start their own business than whites, a new report found.

Drug dealers, prostitution rings, theft rings, scam artists.

Quite a leap.

exemption from even environmental regualtions that whites are not exempt from

While I won't deny that the government has plenty of "set-aside" dollars that some individuals get to benefit from, I have to ask you to support this assertion - I haven't seen any situation where a black-owned or minority-owned business would be exempt from any environmental regs; if so, I would have expected the tree-huggers to go up in smoke long ago...

You want to hear what? The Truth? Drug dealers, prostitution rings, theft rings, scam artists. The kind of thing that plagues all poor neighborhoods because people are afraid to remark about or confront it.

Oh, you're telling me? I come straight out the 'hood yet you are going to educate me on this.

Puh-leeze.

What I objected to is your heavy-handed, knee-jerk, broad-brush of all of us. Don't be surprised that some of us just don't take too kindly to that.

Oh? Then please show me the broad-brush with which I painted all white people. Hell, show me my broad-brush with which I painted any group at all!

Show it to me! I'm waiting...

You are both right, this was inappropriate. Anyone who starts a new business is laudable in my estimation as I have gone that particular road myself. My gall is really for the title of this screed in the first place.

I read it in either National Review or some other conservative publication. I will see if I can dig it out.

And why shouldn't it be the first thing to cross his mind or any white mans'? When you have unequal government advantages that can be taken advantge of by one group and not another it is only natural to think that way. In fact- you would be stupid not to assume it. Sorry if that offends your sensibilities but perhaps you should blame the unequal and immoral policies that allow people to assume such things.

Depends on what part of the country you're from. For those of us from the Buckeye State, it's "bitnezz."

Agreed - I just wish one of these government agencies or private consortiums or foundations would give me the money as opposed to wasting it on stupid studies...

I could give 'em the answer they wanted in about three weeks' time, pocket the cash, and none would be the wiser...

From a million other sources. OR do you deny the existence of such programs, set asides, and government created advantages for minority and women owned business? Anyone who has ever bid on a government contract has seen those disgusting forms wanting detalied info about who owns the business- what color are they? Is it a woman? Yeah- that makes me feel really confident that the bid is legitiamte and based on the best work at the lowest cost. Why wouldn't anyone assume that such disaprity in the number of blacks who start businesses is not the result of such pandering and money redistributing?

I don't think so!

What you have just stated, in essence, is the antithesis of the conservative stance. You hold INDIVIDUALS responsible for THEIR OWN actions. Conservatives neither rely on the group, or blame the group. That's the theory, anyway.

And you can keep your "apology." You can't play a playa, paht-nah. Besides, there is no need to apologize. In fact, I thank you for saying what you have said.

THANK YOU!

Could it be that everyone except the white man is given substantial tax benefits and opportunities that don't exist in the world of the "racist" whitey? Hmmmmm. Sounds like reverse-discrimination to me.

Geez...you certainly have a chip on your shoulder, no one is pointing fingers at you, no one is being racist, they are just stating the obvious. I was a Small Business Liaison Officer under the SBA for over 10 years and it is a well known FACT that the SBA gives preference to minorities on business assistance under their 8(a) Program. According to their website:

Socially disadvantaged individuals are those who have been subjected to racial or ethnic prejudice or cultural bias because of their identity as members of a group. Social disadvantage must stem from circumstances beyond their control. In the absence of evidence to the contrary, individuals who are members of the following designated groups are presumed to be socially disadvantaged:

Black Americans
Hispanic Americans
Native Americans (American Indians, Eskimos, Aleuts, and Native Hawaiians)
Asian Pacific Americans (persons with origins from Japan, China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Korea, Samoa, Guam, U.S. Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands [Republic of Palau], Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Laos, Cambodia [Kampuchea], Taiwan; Burma, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei, Republic of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Macao, Hong Kong, Fiji, Tonga, Kiribati, Tuvalu, or Nauru; Subcontinent Asian Americans (persons with origins from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, the Maldives Islands or Nepal), and
Members of other groups designated by the SBA.

SBA FAQ

I think it is great that you started your business without any assistance from the gubbermint...I truly commend you for that, but the fact remains that these programs are available and many minorities take advantage of them. And it is also true that some abuse these programs by putting 51% of the business in the name of a minority just to get the loans, I have seen this first hand. Anyone that is cognizant of this information, like those who posted above, look at the statements in the article about how "minorities are more likely to start a business" and say "WELL, DUUUUHHHH.....". Hope this clarifies things for you.
