May we never forget. It is hard to believe it has been a year since that terrible day.

Oh great, now us folks in New England have TWO Patriot Day's to keep track of. Way to do your research, guys.

Mind you, I'd have prefered "Beginning of the End for Islamd Day"

Flag was first put up last year on 9/11 at approximately 12:30 after recovering from the initial shock, and has not been taken down since. It's still flying as beatifully now as it did that horrible day, and I will continue to fly it proudly.

You don't take it down at night? I hope you have lighting for it, then.

I should have clarified - it comes down in the rain, at night and when we travel. It goes up first thing every morning and comes down at dark. I do have a question though - the flagpole we have doesn't permit a flag to be flown at half mast - how do I handle that on 9/11. Think I read a black ribbon around the flagpole covers the half mast issue.

Yea, but the "National Patriot Day" is NOT a day off from work as the Massachusetts one is.

"I call upon the people of the United States to observe this day with appropriate ceremonies and activities

I presume that includes open carry of standard military arms like the M16? Oh, that's right, us patriots can't be trusted so our rights have been revoked. Yeah...enemies have attacked us on our own soil and are training/planning to do it again, and we're supposed to remember this by waving candles in the wind.

Seems more like "Target Day" than "Patriot Day".

I thought the same thing, being from MA myself (but now living in NH). Technically, though, it's Patriots Day in MA. It will be hard for me to say "Patriot Day" when I'm so used to saying it with the "S" on it.

I'll third that question Peach - can somebody please confirm how half mast should be represented on a short flag pole (like is often used on the front of a house)?

Sundown on the first Friday after September 11th marks the beginning of Candle Night.

That spontaneous celebration last year was the cathartic release to the anguish of September 11th. Where the remembrances of the11th might be sad and somber, Candle Night is joyous.
