No. They did what the press loves to do -- they lied.
The Russians had it right with the Soviet papers Pravda and Tass ("News" and "Truth" -- I don't know which is which):
There is no truth in the News, and no news in the Truth."
And the American press is clearly of an ilk, fellow-travelers, with the Soviet press.
