AUGUST 22, 09:40 ET Bush Unveils Plan to Fight Wildfires

By JENNIFER LOVEN Associated Press Writer

CRAWFORD, Texas (AP) — Embarking on a three-day Western swing expected to haul in at least $5 million for Republican politicians, President Bush is taking a stand on one of the region's thorniest issues by proposing that more logging in national forests would help prevent devastating wildfires.

Bush was traveling Thursday from his Texas ranch to southwestern Oregon, near the California state line, for a briefing on local fires that have ravaged the area and an aerial view of the damage. The president was then being ferried to the still-smoldering Squires fire, where some forest areas have been entirely stripped of vegetation and crews are working to install erosion-prevention equipment.

Afterward at a nearby fairgrounds, Bush was formally announcing a plan to make it easier for timber companies to get approval to cut wood in fire-prone national forests — surrounded by several Western governors who have been pushing for just such changes.

Though his proposals, first outlined Wednesday, prompted howls from environmentalists, the Bush administration said changes are necessary to clear forests of a decades-long buildup of highly flammable materials.

``For the good of our economy, we need commonsense forest policy,'' Bush said during a stop at Mount Rushmore last week. ``We can and we must manage our forests. We must keep them disease-free. We must have reasonable forest policies so as to prevent fires, not encourage them.''

Bush was rounding out his appearances in Oregon — a state he barely lost to Democrat Al Gore in the 2000 election — with a fund-raising roundtable and dinner in Portland. The $600,000-to-$900,000 take was to be evenly split between the state GOP and Republican Sen. Gordon Smith, one of the Democrats' top targets, who was spending much of the day at Bush's side.

On Friday, Bush heads to California to headline three events expected to give Republican gubernatorial candidate Bill Simon's campaign a much-needed $3 million boost.

While in California, Bush was to speak before a group of Hispanic community advocates and announce new proposals for narrowing the achievement gap in education between minorities and whites, White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said.

The president was returning to his ranch Saturday night, after more dollar-gathering events in New Mexico for GOP candidates for governor and Congress.

This year's wildfires across the West have renewed the perennial debate between conservationists who oppose cutting in the nation's woods and logging interests who argue that underbrush and deadwood increase the risk of fire. Wildfires have burned nearly 6 million acres this summer from Alaska to New Mexico — twice as much as in an average summer. Federal spending to combat wildfires could reach $1.5 billion this year.

Bush's plan would streamline the government's process for reviewing the environmental effects of proposed logging projects; change the standards by which those proposals are approved; and allow government agencies to negotiate contracts giving timber companies and other entities the right to sell the wood products they harvest in exchange for removing them from the forest.

Another key aspect of the proposal would make it harder for environmental groups and others to appeal logging plans.

The administration said some of the proposed changes could be made within the executive branch, while others would require congressional approval. Several Western lawmakers already are drawing up legislation to speed cutting of overgrown forests.

``Needless red tape and lawsuits delay effective implementation of forest health projects,'' said a White House fact sheet on the initiative. ``This year's crisis compels more timely decisions, greater efficiency, and better results to reduce catastrophic wildfire threats to communities and the environment.''

A senior administration official allowed that large, commercially desirable trees with high fire risks — either in dense stands or already dead — could be felled as part of what the official called Bush's ``more active management'' of forest growth.

But environmentalists said the plan could gut safeguards that have protected forests for decades and allow timber companies to not only thin forests of brush, but cut trees — including some more than a century old.

``We're very concerned they will use the fires to further an agenda they've had for a long time — and that is to change key environmental laws'' that serve to protect the forests from logging, said Linda Lance, a Wilderness Society vice president.

I am surprised that the Watermelon Green Jihadist Register even had a byline of President Bush's visit to Medford and Portland. The old Pravda people did a great job in training and selecting the management and reporters for that POS posing as a newspaper.

There was nothing this morning about his Medford trip in the Oregon Live site.

That is the way these left wing fishwraps which push the insanity of the Green Jihadists manage and control the news in Oregon. They are enablers of these criminals posing as enviralists.

Enviralism, communism, socialism and fascism need to control the media to prevent the sheeple from discovering how dangerous these isms are to them and their families.

This why they hate Free Republic and infiltrate it to weaken it.

Please fill us/me in on

Last night on FOX News, Brit Hume had a good piece on Bush's upcoming push for thinning and cutting (gasp) actual trees in order to prevent that devastating fires we've witnessed in the "past two years". He went on to say the enviro-nazi response was to say that "this is nothing more than a thinly disguised assault on our forests, that he (Bush) would USE the fires to justify logging, BECAUSE LOGGERS WERE A BIG SOURCE OF FUNDS FOR BUSH'S PRESIDENTIAL RUN". (as if THEY weren't a big source for GORE and other RATS)

This morning, Molly Henenburg sp?, carried on with the theme that Bush was going to push for SANE usage of the forests, including THINNING, CUTTING and CLEARING, in order to prevent the wholesale burning of our forests, which have "consumed over 6 million acres thus far, this year."

That is as best I can recall it. The coverage was favorable and the reporting on the green jihadists seemed dismissive and slightly derogatory.

Put me on your ping list re these left wing phoney non profits.

I would like to see the moment they write a check for any political candidate or party, they lose their non profit status.

Also, if they use funds to go to congress to complain about judges, appointees and other people up for a legal appointment to that position, they should lose their non profit status.

Last but not least, they are probably the biggest money laundery machines going for the rats.

Assume that you are a Rat CEO of World Com or Arthur Andersen and you want to contibute more to Tommy Da$$hole but you are at your limits. You just write a $100,000 check to Club Sierra Green Jihadists against America. When you hand over your $100,000 check to them, you mention that Tommy Da$$hole needs more campaign money to defeat the evil conservatives.

Shazam, the Club Sierra Green Jihadists against America, deposits your check, and writes a $70,000 check to re elect Little Tommy Da$$hole. The $25,000 was their laundry fee. They are happy, Tommy Da$$hole is happy and the rats do it again via their rat phoney non profits.

The aftermath of the devastating wildfires offers Bush a great opportunity, and shrewd politician that he is, he takes it. The democrats are heavily dependent on the environmental left for funding and election day organizational support, but here they are insisting on the impossible: stopping action to render the forests safer. Tom Daschle has already smuggled an exemption for his home state alone into legislation - he is in no position to fight it nationwide. The left will of course accuse Bush of political payoff to the timber industry, etc. but it will be seen as just more of the democrats non-stop nastiness. Bush's "new tone in Washington" approach is killing them. Republicans now actually lead in the generic congressional ballot question, which means they are way ahead (in 1994 they were down six points on this question just before the huge takeover of Congress). 'Rats are in trouble.

You know what just FROSTS me? Clinton and his NW Forest Management Plan council got XXX amt of acreage taken off the table due to the spotted owls.

After that a concerted effort was started by the enviros to challenge EVERY timber sale re: ESA, NEPA, etc. This effort was furthered by the act of Clinton packing the courts with his judges.

Because they challenged successfully in the courts (suits very selectively filed in courts that would guarantee success) and had MANY timber sales set aside...and with the willing help of the 9th circuit and other activist judges, had many STAYS put in place so many timber sales were temporarily halted...the PERCEPTION---the ACCEPTED PERCEPTION by the public is that now you DO NOT LOG IN NATIONAL FORESTS.

But environmentalists said the plan could gut safeguards that have protected forests for decades and allow timber companies to not only thin forests of brush, but cut trees.

IMO....it is close to criminal that this perception has been left to stand.

``We're very concerned they will use the fires to further an agenda they've had for a long time — and that is to change key environmental laws'' that serve to protect the forests from logging, said Linda Lance, a Wilderness Society vice president.

Read their rhetoric. It is a foregone conclusion that all logging is now illegal--immoral--insane.

Some of these century old trees have a better chance surviving in the hands of loggers then in the hands of these environmentalists

I don't remember hearing about forest fires in forests that are owned, managed and operated by the timber industry, i.e. Weyerhauser, etc..

Thanks ppaul.

Our Jihad against the insane Criminal Green Jihadists gets a real boost today!

Time to remove these hate America/Americans from the illegal power that they have assumed. When they commit crimes and terrorism, arrest them, try them and put them in jail.

Investigate where their money comes from. Are they being funded by the Opecker Princes, al Qaeda, or home grown terrorists? Are they being funded by American Corporations working behind the Curtains to eliminate competion via their activities.

These Green Jihadists are scum, and it is past time to let the rest of America know that they are very dangerous scum who hate America/Americans. They work 24/7 to destroy our country and are more dangerous than al Qaeda is to us!

enviro-nazi response

I read somewhere that some enviros would actually "allow" logging companies to thin forests "if they made no profit from the trees they cut".

Just goes to show that they are more anti-Capitalist than they are pro-Environment.
