Trees Spiked in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest
ELF Press Office ^ | 15 Aug 02 | unknown

Posted on 08/16/2002 5:19:58 PM PDT by Glutton

The following message was received by the Earth Liberation Front Press Office - it should be noted that this action was not claimed by any group - but the message stands for itself:

Hundreds of metallic and non-metallic spikes have been placed in units 28 and 29 of the Kirk Timber Sale in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. The spikes were placed at all levels of the trees. Most trees have both metallic and non-metallic spikes.

The Douglas Fir, Hemlock, Cedar, and Yew trees are an average of 300 years old. The 16 acre grove is a refuge of Cascadian native forest and is adjacent to the Dark Divide Roadless area. It is home to Elk, Owl, and Bear among other wild beings. Logging this grove would require rebuilding a road and replacing a bridge over a major creek.

The Kirk Timber Sale is one of many sales currently proposed in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. Industrial logging of public lands is primarily a public subsidy for timber companies. The US Forest Service timber sale program has never been economically viable and loses money yearly at the people's expense. The main benificiaries are the owners and managers of a handful of timber companies. This system does provide jobs for a few local residents, but fewer all the time because of unsustainable logging practices. That short term benefit is outweighed by the long term losses of topsoil, clean water, fisheries, and biodiversity which greatly reduce the chances that local people can make a sustainable living on the land. The timber sale program is the same as industrial resource extraction around the world in that its short term profits are enjoyed by only a few while the costs are felt by all. Acts of resistance like this spiking are part of a larger worldwide struggle to defend land and communities against clearcuts, war, and other acts of greed.

This action seeks to keep these old growth trees from ever being cut. It is not intended to put any timberworkers at risk. This message is being sent out before any trees are felled.

Spiking trees is evil. It directly endangers hard working blue collar workers who fall and buck trees for a living.

People who do this are cowards and scoundrels. If one has a beef; protest, start a petition, educate yourself beter on the issue and those simular to it.

Most importantly, diolog with those whom you conflict with. Nothing else is worth doing unless one does that too. If indeed they spiked trees in the forests of Washington State, I hope they are caught, and punished meaningfully for their actions.

When people pick on workers and not policy setters, they are bullies and unfit to be in society.

They'll make great patio furniture!

The 16 acre grove ... is home to Elk, Owl, and Bear among other wild beings.

Looks like the hunters are in luck too!

Logging this grove would require rebuilding a road and replacing a bridge over a major creek.

Sounds like jobs for road and construction crews. This place just keeps on giving!

I have been told by a historian that the 'National Forests' were first established to ensure an adequate supply of TIMBER for the Navy.

As for these eco-nazis, may they fall on their own spikes.

These people are arsonists and will kill someone eventually unless they are dealt with.

They are the kiss of death, not even your average middle America cheerleader of treesitters like that bunch of thugs.

"Most importantly, diolog with those whom you conflict with."

When your purpose is the destruction of those whom you conflict with, why bother with dialogue?

The radical enviro movement in concerned with the destruction of jobs, in particular, and capitalism, in general.

every mile within the marked section
           of old growth forest
           planned for harvest
           (Refer to map below).
It is not intended to put any

How long before a forest firefighter is injured or killed as they are cutting a firebreak within these spiked tree areas?

No, if they really want to protect the trees, they need to buy the property or buy the trees. Telling the entire nation what we can and can't do, buy, build, farm, or create is simply anti-Freedom.

I bet these people use paper and pencils (made from trees) every day. They probably even live in wooden houses.

Hundreds of spikes. Yeah right. Unless you use something as big as a railroad spike, it won't even cause those monster saws a hiccup. To drive a railroad spide into and below the bark of a big tree ya gotta use at least a small sledge hammer. That's probably about thirty blows.

This means you drive one spike ... bury your hammer and the other spikes and hightail it outa there. Because you know that any local who finds you with a spike and or a hammer ... will kill you. On the spot. While you are there, pounding away on your spike .... your're wondering ... "Am I in the crosshairs of someone 500 or even 1000 yards away?"

Believe me, if they have set a dozen spikes I'd be surprised. And you only have to wave a metal detector over the bottom few feet to find the spikes. These blowhards are impressing no one but themselves.

Do tell. Earthfirsters in wooden houses?

I figured they lived in caves; that's how they act.

Dragging their knuckles as they walk.

It should be open season on tree spikers. I live in sw Oregon and I wash ash off my truck every morning. I wish we could chain a spiker to every tree on the fire line. And tell them, ok just save this one.

People on all issues run the full spectrum of beliefs about them.

I have met decent people wanting elevated diolog on forest issues, and those who's ego says no to diolog, and just want to hurt and punish.

My point is that non-violent civil disobedience is one thing; and the break-away Earth liberation Front self professed monkey wrenchers are quite another.

One will never get rid of people for more or less logging out there.

The trick is to cull out those doing violence, who endanger lives, and don't understand this is a free republic where we can civilly disguss our differences.

Good point. When the oakridge Ranger Station was torched by ELF, not only did hundreds of trees have to die for a replacement and the community at large bcome alienated, but a gentleman who regularly slept there on a cot as he lived a ways away could have died without the "non-violent" ELFers even knowing he was there.

Only dumb luck prevented a tragety.
