Big Brothers hit for backing gay mentors
New York Daily News ^ | 8/16/02 | AP

Big Brothers Big Sisters of America has told its 490 local affiliates to give openly gay and lesbian volunteers an equal chance to serve as one-on-one mentors to children, incurring the wrath of several conservative groups.

The 98-year-old organization - devoted to helping children from single-parent homes - says it is undaunted by the criticism, which includes calls for its corporate backers to halt donations.

"We're getting incredible, positive support for the action we took," the organization's president, Judy Vredenburgh, said yesterday.

Big Brothers Big Sisters has endorsed nondiscrimination principles for 25 years that cover sexual orientation, race, religion and ethnicity.

Only last month, however, did the provision about sexual orientation become mandatory policy for all affiliates, a few of which had been rejecting gays.

Parents will still have the option of rejecting mentors for various reasons, including sexual orientation. Still, the move has provoked outrage from several conservative organizations.

Donald Wildmon, chairman of the Tupelo, Miss.-based American Family Association, contends that Big Brothers Big Sisters "will become a magnet for homosexuals who exploit opportunities to engage young, impressionable children with their unhealthy lifestyle."

There has been no indication corporate backers will shy away from Big Brothers Big Sisters. Larry Plumb, a spokesman for Verizon Communications, said his company has a long track record in support of nondiscrimination.

Oh, this is really going to appeal to parents. Will this mentoring occur in motel rooms?

I wonder how these corporations like Verizon could be held responsible when the first criminal sexual abuse by a Sodomite volunteer hits?

I've contributed to the BB/BS program for years. But not now. This really makes me question their concern for and ability to be mentoring children.

Will the Sheraton or Motel 6 offer special 'mentoring rates'?

I worked with this woman who was a "Big Sister", and behind her back were whispers of her sexual preference, (BTW: not men for you DU lurkers)!

I always wondered how anyone would let her spend time alone with his or her daughter.

We are reaping a Wild-fire Whirl-wind, out of control, from the '60's Sexual Revolution'.

Big Brothers serves mostly kids who don't have a father in the house. This is usually because the father has pulled a vanishing act. IF the hetero men who fathered these children would fullfil their responsibilities there wouldn't be this desperation to get gay men to substitute for them!

Getting a happy and gay man to substitute as a father is one thing. Getting a homosexual man to substitute is another. I was angry with my father. I had a big brother. But my mom, and a lot of other moms, would not turn to the Big Brothers with this sick taint on it. This is not about helping kids. This is about cramming homosexuality down everyone's throat. I'm all for homosexuals being equal citizens. But a parent has the right to free exercize of religion. This is against my religion. And just as I would not want my kid exposed to the drug scene, I would not want my kid exposed to homosexuals.

Years ago an associate of mine applied to volunteer as a Big Brother.

He gave me as a reference and BB sent me a very detailed questionnaire to complete, which I gladly did.

BB was clearly going to great lengths to AVOID exposing their young clients to homos at that point in history.

That, sadly, appears to have changed.

Liberal mothers will gladly not care about their sons and daughters about this issue. These are the same women who do not allow their childrent to play with toy guns. The would gladly sacrafic YOUR child to their cause.

This is another elitist attempt to normalize the homosexual fetish.

"Parents will still have the option of rejecting mentors for various reasons, including sexual orientation."

And when they do, they'll be harassed and called a homophobe. What will BB/BS do to protect parents from being harassed when they decide to reject a homosexual "mentor"?

Does BB/BS have a blank on its application form to indicate "sexual orientation"? If so, how do they verify this information? What happens if an applicant claims they are straight, and then later decides to "come out" as a homosexual? What about the "bisexuals" and "transgenders"? Do the "bisexuals" get to mentor a boy or a girl? Or one of each? And what about the S&M's (sadomasochists)? S&M's have their place in the homosexual community so they certainly couldn't discriminate against them.

Homosexuals are not appropriate mentors for children!

Why? Do you think you will hear about it? Do you remember when the boy scout leader was accused of molesting young boys, and all the mainstream media could talk about was that he worked in a church?

Remember Jesse Dirkhausing. There is a different standard for homosexual molestation.

Simply spiffy. Pretty soon they'll be able to add some new entries to their list of supported causes, but none of them are fit to print. Think I'm gonna hurl...

Hey, why not? After all, it worked in the Catholic Church. (that was sarcasm, son)

It seems the lessons from the Church scandals are lost on the majority of society. And yet, the Boy Scouts are perpetually attacked by the fags and their defenders, like the ACLU.
