NEW YORK, Aug 14 (AFP) - An Israeli citizen accused of insider trading and fraud in the United States has been extradited by Israel to New York to stand trial, a Manhattan federal prosecutor said Wednesday.
Michael Akva, 36, was arrested in March 2000 and indicted for profiting from confidential information supplied to him by an employee who worked for both Goldman Sachs and Credit Suisse First Boston, said James Comey said in a statement.
Akva bought and sold stocks of companies he knew the two banks were working with on merger and acquisition deals.
Released from jail on bail, Akva fled to Israel, hoping his Israeli citizenship would protect him from extradition. But he was arrested in Israel in April 2001, pursuant to an international arrest warrant issued by the United States.
The Israeli Supreme Court ruled on July 17, 2002 that a new extradition law passed by the Israeli parliament on April 19, 1999 allowed for his extradition.
Since Akva was born in Stockholm, and had never been an Israeli resident before his arrest in the United States, he did not have the right to serve out any eventual sentence in an Israeli prison, according to the statement.
If he is found guilty, Akva could be sentenced to up to 15 years in jail and fined several million dollars.
Sixteen other people were indicted in connection with this case, all of which plead guilty, Comey said.
Ouch! The negative focus on Israel does appear intense, doesn't it?
Anyhoo, if the guy is guilty for the crime, he should do the time.
Oops!

How can this article possibly be construed as "anti-Israeli"?
They have provided valuable service to Israel in the past.
Don't believe me?
Do a search of the Old Testament using "Hornets".
Appaerntly, he hopes to unleash a small contingent of people who are ready to genealize a misdeed of one Jew to all Jews and provoke a "fight." RCW2001 never participates in his own threads. His whole purpose is to insult and provoke.
He also posts on the Arab websites. A wonderful development --- a jihadist on FR.
I have reported in the past most blatant occurrences of this behavior, but FR seems to condone it. Despite the statements that anti-Semitism is not going to be tolerated, FR provides a wonderful outlet to people like RCW2001 and LarryLeid (the latter expressed at length and unambiguously his disagrement with Hitler's stadards of racial purity, finding them not stringent enough). These people turn most unrelated threads into something about the Jews and/or Israel, often posting MISinformation from most vile sites.
I really do not know why FR allows itself to be used for such base purposes. Bigots on FR and in the conservative movement do us all a disservice by alienting minorities. Such people have no place among true conservatives --- and moral people in general.
I agree with TopQuark. While they may be entertaining on some level, I think they damage the credibility of FR as a "political" resource. Time spent debunking the underlying premises of the protocols is time wasted, which doesnt elevate the political consciousness of any of us. And given the volume of posts, lots doesnt get debunked.
Worse, it plays into the stereotype of Republicans and conservatives as, if not bigots, at least a group who tolerates bigotry in their ranks. Think of how it appears to a lurker who is just having a look at conservative political thought.
As another poster once commented, a scrapbook of one of our Freepers comments would be a great asset to James Carville in helping the Dems retain minority voters.
Hangin' chad in #10: How can this article possibly be construed as "anti-Israeli"?
That's what I was thinking. Israel has been criticized for not turning over a few alleged criminals. They extradite this guy and there's something wrong with that?
