SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- A Wyoming man arrested after airport security screeners discovered a loaded semi-automatic handgun in his carryon luggage was being held in Santa Clara County jail Tuesday night.

William Simmons, 57, was arrested around 2:45 Tuesday afternoon at Mineta San Jose International Airport after a screener found the gun in his luggage and notified police, said Officer Joseph Deras, a spokesman with the San Jose Police Department.

Simmons was being held on charges of possessing a concealed loaded firearm, Deras said. Simmons was uncooperative with police and had to be forcibly arrested, he said. Simmons was taken to a nearby hospital after complaining he was hyperventilating. He was examined and released, Deras said.

The airport was not evacuated because security screeners found the weapon before Simmons was past the checkpoint, Deras said.

"Got any links to the source of those 'promises' you cite? Thanks."

Wow, I can't believe you're really challenging him on that!

This is what I'll politely call "common knowledge", along the lines of "the sky is blue".

If some nabob comes riding in demanding incontrovertible scientific proof "that the sky really IS blue", I'd tell him to get stuffed, and he'd have to be the biggest fool in town to not realize it in advance and keep his piehole shut.

"I am free to carry a concealed weapon in many places, but there are restrictions, and for the most part they are there for a good reason. I can't carry into places that serve alcohol, big public gatherings like concerts, and airports."

Why is it "a good reason" for you to be prohibited from defending yourself in precisely those locations where you are more likely to come in contact with predatory goblins? (Whom, in your ideal world, recognize the fact that they're in a world of low-hanging fruit when they enter those venues!)

"Hate to disappoint you, but that's not an explosive decompression. Explosive decompression is a sudden, rapid loss of cabin pressure. Ever been through one? I have, on an Air Force KC-135. The sudden drop in air pressure really screws up your ears, but what's really interesting is you find out why the oxygen masks on civilian aircraft are bright orange. When the pressure drops, all the moisure in the air condenses - suddenly you can't see more than a few inches in front of your face."

Hate to break it to you but one -- or several -- bullet holes are not going to cause "explosive decompression" unless you're in a James Bond movie.

They will at most increase the amount of air coming into the already-leaky fusilage by a trivial amount, well within the ability of the pressurization system to handle. If anything at all happens, it will be the regulating flapper valves closing a micro-tad to compensate for the reduced pressure.

"What makes you think FAM's are the first and only armed people on aircraft?"

I have no idea what an "FAM" is. I do know that it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that predators go where the prey is, and an airplane that has armed passengers is not a wabbit warren for Mr. Terror-Fudd to go hunting in.

If passengers were armed, 9/11 would not have occurred. It really is that simple.

Right. I agree. Others don't. Some are more agreeable in their disagreement than others.

In my posts, I don't recall asking anyone to go by my experience. In fact, what I said was 'you go by Free Republic, I'll go by my experience in aircraft maintenance.'"

Nice spin, argument-by-authority-boy. Sorry, your reverse gear ain't working today. You said what you said, and you don't weasel out of it that easily.

"But hey, feel free to interpret what I say in any way you want."

I interpret it at face value, as would any reasonable man. Feel free to try to spin your way out of it, backpedalmeister.

"BTW, you might want to read the other posts I have on this thread regarding 'explosive decompression,' ok?"

I have read them all, and found them wanting. Severely.

"Have a nice night, and you might want to cut down on the caffiene."

Likewise, and try to lay off the crack while posting.

Well, gosh darn it, Don Joe, there's just no way I can stand up to you. You win.

Feel better?

It's frightening to see so many "conservatives" buying into the Victim Disarmament propaganda. And sad, too.

Keep up the good fight!

Spin? By quoting myself after you'd already quoted me? Okey doke. You caught me. Gosh, Don Joe, I'm awful sorry that I upset you. Please, don't hurt my feelings anymore.

Why must you make everything into a competition? Are you a life insurance saleman? Do your eyes gravitate towards employment ads that include the phrase "sports-minded individuals needed"?

"Feel better?"

Than what?

There you go again. Playing the ingenue does not wear well on you my friend. But since you seem to be crying out for help, I'll meet you half way. When you commit a faux pas (and really, it happens to everyone!), instead of digging in, simply say something like, "Mea culpa!" and let it rest.

"Please, don't hurt my feelings anymore."

Put some ice on it. :)

Who was competing? Not me. But rather than sit there and argue with you, I just give up. No sense in it. You've already decided that I don't know what I'm talking about, so there's no sense in continuing.

Are you a life insurance saleman? Do your eyes gravitate towards employment ads that include the phrase "sports-minded individuals needed"?

Why? Are there openings where you work?

Than what?

Nah - that one is too easy.

There are as many posts on FR about gun fire reaking open an aircraft as there are those that say it can't happen. How any aircraft have had that happen that you are aware of? Not many. But that is not because it wouldnt or cant happen; it is because there has not been that many incidences of gunfire aboard aircraft. So if thats not an issue, then why is anyone complaining about his "rights" being taken away in the first place?

Anyone familiar with guns and aircraft KNOWS. Anyone familiar with just guns does NOT.

How much aviation experience do you have in either engineering or maintenance? Just a simple question, a simples answer (like 1 year, or 10 years) will suffice. Thanks.

FAM = Federal Air Marshall. It is what they are referred to as. It's a new thing. Maybe you hadn't heard of it yet.

Well golly, since we were discussing armed passengers I guess that makes perfect sense that you'd stick that in there. Not.

Cognitive dissonance? Or did you reply to that "Hooked On Nonsequitors!" spam?

Sooo.....everyone onboard an aircraft should have a gun so no one shoots someone. Okaaaayyy.....LOL!

The aviation industry takes measures to secure aircraft from people carrying onboard itmes used for hijackings, etc. It is not a perfect science. But it obviously works, or this thread would not be here. So tell me again why everyone onboard a private aircraft needs a weapon? Or are you next going to suggest that all airlines need to be government run, since thats what you are aiming towards.

Hahahahah! Playing that game are we?

OK, Ace, I tell ya what. I'll answer that after you document some real-life instances of "explosive decompression" as requested in post 118 almost an hour ago.

Since you continue to 1) insist it's a valid concern, and 2) play the authority card, this shouldn't be any problem for you at all, right?
