I would agree with that way of looking at it ---normal people wouldn't even want to listen to the lyrics of many of these "songs".

It's interesting to see the reaction of actual old-time hip hop fans(my friends and I) when listening to some of the junk you hear these days. Of course, we were always used to SOME violent imagery, but it USED to be only a cinematic way of telling a story or quasi-political, but now it's just senseless.

My friends and I were just shaking our heads with mouths agape at Eminem's song about killing his wife. Mindless violence isn't approved of by everyone, not even amongst hip hop fans.
