Presidential notebook: Protesters rally against president
Published Jul 12, 2002
About 300 protesters, many carrying antiwar signs, rallied outside Target Center in a boisterous demonstration to express their opposition to President Bush's military policies in Afghanistan.
There also were abortion-rights supporters, critical of Bush's views, and environmentalists who accused Bush and U.S. Senate candidate Norm Coleman of taking contributions from corporate polluters.
"Put an end to endless war," a sign read. "Money for housing not war," read another.
Jessica Sundin, a spokeswoman for the Antiwar Committee, a main sponsor of the protest, said the demonstration was called on two days' notice and reflected growing dismay with Bush's war efforts and restrictions of civil liberties at home under Attorney General John Ashcroft.
As Bush supporters left Target Center shortly before 7 p.m., some of them waved small American flags and screamed at protesters. "I hate them all," said Katie El-Die, 22.
About 40 police officers, including six on horses, stood between the demonstrators and Target Center at 7th St. and 1st Av. N. At 7 p.m., the crowd had dwindled. There were no arrests.
Gary DeVaan, a Web designer from Chanhassen, was strictly a freelance protester, unaffiliated with any of the anarchists, environmentalists and pacifists. "Bush Cheated" his T-shirt declared. He carried two signs: "Selected, Not Elected" and "Appoint a special prosecutor."
Said DeVaan: "He has run this country into the ground in a second. We had prosperity, reasonably good times -- and look what we've got now. I'm not with any of these left-wing groups -- I'm just disgusted with everything this guy represents."
