You can almost smell the policy-wonk rage coming off this letter.
How dare the Post tell people how to avoid paying Martha's precious tax. Government has a God-given right to any and all peoples money, so the government can save them from themselves.
Shes probably frustrated that the law doesnt allow her to shut down the newspaper. Yet.

You can almost smell the policy-wonk rage coming off this letter.True; but this woman is more than just a policy wonk, she is nothing more than a covert racist. Her rant is a rather subtle attack on our Native American cousins. What next? NY state troopers attacking the reservations and burning the wickiups. There should be room for racists in government.

You guys really know how to pick women! You have Martha and Hillary. Shame on you. But there is a redeeming factor-- you are not Massachusetts.

For a great summation of the NY taxation mess, try:
http://reason.com/sullum/070502.shtml
An excerpt:
"Bloomberg thus announced the purity of his own motives even as he took his cut from a business the anti-smoking movement depicts as inherently evil, profiting from the deadly folly of its customers. When a New Yorker buys a pack of Marlboros, the city will make four or five times as much as Philip Morris does. But that's OK, because the mayor's heart is in the right place."

What a bunch of morons. The low level nazis are always the worst. Taxes were already paid at the point of purchase, nice try though. When taxes are raised too high, then the black market takes over. Really tugs at your heart strings that they are going to get LESS revenue because of their confiscatory tax.

Frankly, she can go have marital relations with herself. If threatening the residents of NYC is her idea of good governance, she needs to get out of office. Time for a little backlash.

How many people will the NYC jails hold at any one time?
This seems to me like it could cost NYC more than they can take in in taxes and penalties if everyone said give me jail time Martha-I'm not going to play your stupid tax game.

New York's Indian reservations should accept their share of the blame and pay cigarette taxes, as they do in Connecticut and other states. SHE'S A LIAR!

Push the price higher than the market will support and the black market will prosper.
Ain't Capitalism a b*tch?!?
Go figure, tax Nazis...

The Department of Finance, which administers the cigarette tax, is serious about nailing tax cheats. Make something as common as tobacco practically illegal and you'll tommy-guns soon

This sounds a lot like the Govt. protests about all the liquor being imported and sold everywhere during Prohibition. It did not stop the illegal liquor from coming in and being sold. The illegal sales enriched the criminals, including the infamous Kennedys who used much of it to buy RAT politicians including FDR. The govt got miniscule results from all their PR, extra police and FBI efforts, not to mention all the tax money they spent tring in vain to regulate the law. Prohibition was finally repealed as uncontrollable.
Watch these asinine state laws go the same route. The Mafia and the Indian tribes must be laughing all the way to the bank.

She should change her name to Black Market Martha. They over-stepped their limits, now they'll have a black market that surpasses that created during prohibition.

This IS good news!
Keep sharpening those contradictions, Martha girl!
Keep the cannibal face of 'public need' right out front, where the children can see it plainly.
