You can almost smell the policy-wonk rage coming off this letter.
How dare the Post tell people how to avoid paying Martha's precious tax. Government has a God-given right to any and all peoples money, so the government can save them from themselves.
Shes probably frustrated that the law doesnt allow her to shut down the newspaper. Yet.

Dear Martha:
Kiss off, honey. A lot of your supporters will be bringing in truckloads. Why do you think the tax was raised? For you? Ha, ha,ha,ha,ha!

This leaves no further room for pretense that there are public "servants."

We're stepping up enforcement because too many lives and too much money is at stake. New Yorkers lost an estimated $40 million in uncollected tax revenue last year alone - revenue that could have been used to support safety, education and other vital services during these tough budget times. I thought the tax was about discouraging smoking, since it's dangerous and all. Turns out it's all about feeding the machine. Who knew!

Yeah, sure, lady. And all of us who buy products over the internet to avoid the sales tax, need to remember to voluntarily send the sales tax we should have paid directly to our states.

In New York City, you are entitled to a jury trial for a misdemeanor. The only difference is that there are six jurors instead of twelve. Martha, shall we start voir dire? OK, the defendent's attorney will now question the first potential juror....

Oh, this is so precious. Ol' Martha must think being cute is going to coerce people into paying that tax. Uh nyuh.
I suppose the next step is going to be raiding smoker's houses to find out if they paid the cig tax, huh?

Don't laugh... New Jersey doesn't (or didn't) have sales tax on clothing, and there were a number of cases where NY sent "spys" to NJ shopping malls, to jot down the license numbers of NY residents that they considered to be "tax cheats," and they sent threatening letters to them!

So it goes. I would guess that several million Americans have now been moved into the criminal class. We all must break any number of obscure laws every day just going about our daily lives. As the old Chinese curse says:
"May you live in interesting times and come to the attention of important people."

It would be tragic if a campaign was begun to mail her envelopes full of stinky illegal cigarette butts.

New York Cityites need to start a trend: New York Tobacco Party with a strong resemblance to an event a few years ago called the Boston Tea Party.

Martha E. StarkRavingMad I like it. She kind of reminds me of Diana Moon Glampers

I don't understand how NYC will know if you buy more than the allotted amount off the Internet.
If you order fifty cartons in ten boxes, shipped through the US Mail, does the City have the right to open the mail in order to inspect the contents? Are local m unicipalities allowed to tamper with the US mail?

New Yorkers lost an estimated $40 million in uncollected tax revenue That's my favorite line. How can you lose something you never had in the first place???

I don't understand why they must go through all these games and motions to take other people's money. They should be honest and simply hire a bunch of scary looking characters, arm them with clubs and machetes and have them go door to door, simply taking things from people and keep doing that until the gov't gets whatever it is it needs.

Anybody have an e-address for Martha? She might get a kick out of reading this thread.

I think many Michiganders will be going to Mt Pleasent and Indiana with Engler's tax increase.......(At least my Senator said no deals)
