ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- The state Health Department has urged residents statewide to clear their property of standing water where mosquitoes breed since evidence of the West Nile virus has been found recently in New York City and seven counties.
Testing of a mosquito pool on June 25 in Saw Mill Marsh on Staten Island came back positive, and previous findings identified 16 infected birds from Albany, Erie, Monroe, Nassau, Niagara, Ontario and Rockland counties, according to the department.
"Our past experience suggests that the risk of human cases of West Nile virus increases during July and August in our state," said Dr. Antonia Novello, state health commissioner.
Dead birds, particularly crows, can be an indicator of the virus. People who see them are asked to call 1-866-537-BIRD or their local health department.
The virus, which is transmitted by mosquito bites, attacks people's central nervous systems and can weaken the immune system and muscles, but less than 1 percent of people who become infected exhibit symptoms.
In 2001, 27 states and Washington, D.C., documented cases of the virus in humans. There were 66 cases of severe symptoms and nine deaths in the United States in 2001.
To help prevent mosquitoes from breeding, the department suggests cleaning and chlorinating outdoor pools, removing discarded tires, draining recycling containers, clearing gutters and landscaping to eliminate stagnant water.
The doors to this country are wide open.
It is politically incorrect along the northerneastern states to spray in order to kill mosquitos. There is much controversy over what is and what is not "safe" material to spray.
Yellow fever has a history of getting loose on the eastern seaboard; its presence being more expected than malaria, based on historical experience.
People have been flocking into the U.S.A. ever since the events of Sept. 11, 2001; the most conservative number is around 481,000; the most liberal estimate is just over 2,000,000.
Some carry malaria; some carry yellow fever; mosquitos come too; but moreover, the mosquitos here are unbiased and will consume either virus without prejudice.
Spreading it via their larvae.
For a time, D.D.T. was used to knock down malaria and yellow fever (and a host of others), but D.D.T. has become politically incorrect. Too bad, because the alternative chemicals have since elicited even more angst from the greens.
Lots of chatter while the mosquitos go about their business.
Now, if we are to knock out malaria and convince people of the necessity to spray, should I tell you that we are after (1) yellow fever, (2) malaria, or (3) West Nile Virus?
Well, any of the three we go after, will get a lot of the other, so I will tell you first the least deadly is the target ... and then later, when you are not listening because enough people have not yet died, I will tell you the next more serious.
Trouble is, which is that?
Malaria sounds terrible, but yellow fever is perhaps the more immediately deadly.
Well who ever heard of such a thing? What is the purpose; to cause panic?
Nope. Hard fact is, if we fail to subdue the mosquitos, these three diseases will "gain."
In the old days, big cities on the east coast used to literally vacate. (Currently, in Charleston, SC, they have the presence of mind to spray all the time; and they had better.)
Having said all that, the immediate answer to your question can be found by pounding down the door at the C.D.C.; I can tell you for certain that they will be lying to you if they say that malaria is not in the country.
It is.
But I'm just a dumb clerk, and I wouldn't know much beyond what the "experts" will tell you.
Those would be the same experts who fancy that they know how to run a war against terrorism, directed against everybody's grandmother.
In my humble opinion; you could quote me, but I would have to say that I am just guessing.
Bacteriological Warfare components in the hands of the Islamic "world" that follows a God who Hates, may be relied upon to be delivered by ways conducive for mosquitos to spread such diseases, yellow fever, malaria, and West Nile Virus, to name three which would ring a bell via the news media.
Saddam and Iraq are known carriers; but please add the other known dilettantes (lovers of the fine art of killing people):
Communist Cuba / Fidel CastroRed China
North Korea
--- the Axis of Terrorism.
These carriers are a sore point for the menu-driving leftist political moment who would save bugs before you --- see the remarks of Reed Noss, the poster boy of environmentalist wackos and author of "The Wildlands Project," says "... the collective needs of non-human species must take precedence over the needs and desires of humans" at Trouble brewing in Florida's swamps: Henry Lamb explains why property owners are fighting mad, WorldNetDaily, July 7, 2002 (posted by JohnHuang2).
Their years of crying out in protest to ostensibly save the environment from applying bug-killer, has accounted an expense of millions of people who have died from malaria in southern Asia, Africa, and Central and South America --- but who is to notice? when such socialist acts for votes are not judged by the left as anything but spiritual purification before their altar (thank you joanie-f).
It would please our nationalizing socialist leftists (Hillary Clinton, her court: attorneys, Strobe Talbot, et al) to not spray, get votes, let people die, and later read the newspaper op-eds about what we should have done back in the Summer of 2002, because that is what liberals do: experiment with human life on large scales, all errors washed down the drains, examples: the malaria dead and the10s of millions of aborted babies, bye-bye, out of sight and never on the mind.
Yet a weapon of mass destruction, when it comes to biology, is the mosquito; and we now face the serious prospect, beginning this month, that we either kill it or it kills us.
However, the historical evidence is in, regarding how the Democrat Party's political momenti will rule the fate of mankind, their inclinations to date: Utopia is found by fratricidal maniacs; the people must first die or otherwise suffer en masse to get to permanent dependency --- that's correct, it cannot be achieved.
Just swell; therefore in the meanwhile suffering our directorates, that we might live, requires that enough well-minded people still be alive to observe and then put a stop to the madness by applying bug-killer, let alone voting out the fratricidal maniacs.
Firearms will not protect you.
Backyard bug bombs might.
Some people like Cutters; I prefer OFF.
