Father of El Al attacker former Egyptian army general

CAIRO: The father of Egyptian gunman Hisham Mohammed Hadayet who opened fire at a check-in counter of Israeli carrier El Al in Los Angeles was a general in Egypt's army, his neighbors said Friday.

The former general, Ahmad Ali Hadayet, lives in the family household in the central Abbassiya district in Cairo, an AFP reporter said.

The information was confirmed by security sources here, but the family refused to talk to reporters.

On Thursday, Hisham Hadayet opened fire at the check-in counter of Israel's national airline El Al killing a 20-year-old female clerk and a middle-aged man, before being shot dead himself by an El Al security agent.

"I have known Hisham for several years. He was a normal person, he was religious but did not go often to the mosque," one of his neighbors said, requesting anonymity.

Hadayet's wife and two children returned to Egypt in June, security sources said. They added that his wife has been questioned, without elaborating.

FBI officials said that Hadayet was on their watch list, without saying why. They added he had lived in the United States since 1992 and worked as a limousine driver.

Egyptian officials kept mum Friday after the FBI revealed one of their fellow nationals carried out the Los Angeles attack. Officials at the interior ministry refused to comment when questioned by reporters.

Lawyer Montasser al-Zayet, who defends Egyptian Islamists in court, said Hadayet was not known to be a member of any Islamist movement.

This should be an immediate flag to watching these guys even closer: Hadayet's wife and two children returned to Egypt in June, security sources said. They added that his wife has been questioned, without elaborating.

If they send their wives or children back to the Middle East after several years of being here, an immediate Red Flag Warning should go up re the Islamic Father/Husbands staying here.

Whenever it comes to the airline industry, identifying terrorism is diluted.

The words used is "isolated incident." Well, what's isolated? Does that preclude terrorism?

Yep, any of these guys on watch lists, who have said goodbye to Fatima and the little future terrorists to be, should go to the top of the watch list.

I bet that he is not the only one on watch lists who has sent their family back to the middle east.

"I don't understand why the US gummint and media are trying to convince us that this wasn't a terrorist act? "

I'd say is is to keep the already battered airline industry from collapsing completely. Looks like the security will have to be moved to the airport gates.

This doesn't seem like a terrorist event to me. Seems more like a targeted assassanation. Who were the victims and what did they know?

Remember that other Muslim foreigner that served in a somewhat elevated position in the U.S. military? I believe he was an Egyptian. Chime in if I am wrong. Anyway, reports indicated that he was an agent using his U.S. military position as a spy for his native country. Our military was embarassed to reveal that.

FBI says now that, despite reports in the media, the killer was NOT on the FBI watch list, per the LA press conference that just ended.

Hmmm, was this the same Egyptian army that assassinated Anwar Sadat?

Ali Mohammad, he's in prison but turned out to be a triple agent or something. He was a Green Beret, i think, and rumored to have one of the sources of US training materiel to the alqaeda and others.

I say they should also do auto checks on female Middle-Eastern women who leave their "watch list" husbands behind to return to their country of origin. This should have been an obvious red flag

Good thinking. This is first report I've read that says perp was on watch list. Wonder whether it's true.

Just an observation about denying terr-

I, unluckily, watched the Peter Jennings news last night. Like other leftist media, ABC is working off "talking points" that suggest that all stories be framed with a conclusion that America and Israel are opposed ("Bush says yes, Sharon says no"). I saw this with the story with a triumphalist tone "Israeli intel says terr, but the FBI, etc. etc. who have investigated this say it's an isolated incident." Jennings was actually gleeful to make sure this can't be construed as a "bad for Arabs" story. A quite liberal friend of mine, who I have been bugging about Jennings and others turned to me and said "wow, he is biased, you're right." Frankly, how could any media make any conclusion? How about an "isolated incident of terrorism" - is that a good compromise?

Interesting.

With the high level of integrity and intelligence that the FBI has shown in the last 10 years, it's a big surprise that the FBI would be denying this. < /sarcasm >

Now if we can get this data from the reliable Israeli sources like you posted from last night. This will blow the cover right off of this clymer.

Grampa may have sit you in the corner for quiet time for watching Jennings!

However, this is a great statement by you, so I will hold off on your quiet time:

Your statement: How about an "isolated incident of terrorism" -:)

It will be interesting to hear how Jennings and the other Arab lickers on tv try to spin and handle this news as it comes out. Of course, they will probably just spike it or fast read it right before a 3 minute commercial.

How 'bout rage at the terrible inequity of living in the USA, driving a Benz, running a limo (what a nice cover to transport visiting jihadis and conduct clandestine meetings on the go) company, and oh, the injustice and agony of having a neighbor unfurl a biga** flag?

Sheesh, no wonder he cracked. Who get bear having a life like his?

I know a limo company owner as well as some limo drivers. Believe me, the drivers do not make enough money to support the type of house in his neighborhood this guy lived in, the upkeep, the taxes, a wife, a couple of kids, trips to Egypt, etc. Most drivers are part-timers, retired guys, students working their way through college, moonlighters, or those with other sources of income driving because they like the job.

I hope the IRS is going through the perp's bank accounts now.....oops, I forget, they only go through the finances of conservative organizations and citizens.
