June 24, 2002 -- A Brooklyn woman and her 11-year-old granddaughter were killed when an out-of-control SUV jumped a curb and slammed into them as they sat in front of their building, police said yesterday.

"It's like a nightmare. I left my kids and their grandmother and went to work, and I come home to find out they are dead," said a distraught Roslyn Patrick, 30.

Yesterday, Rush mentioned a different story where a photographer was squashed by an SUV. The driver was not charged. I wonder if out-of-control SUVs are a nationwide phenomena - or just a NY thang...

The SUV did it; register all SUV's; report all you neighbors with SUV's to the International Criminal Court.

Simply put, whenever the press can tie an SUV to anything bad they do so. People get in car accidents every day but the only time the body type of the vehicle is mentioned prominently is when it's an SUV.

I was just thinking the same thing. I have always found this personification of inanimate objects quite peculiar.

A Brooklyn woman and her 11-year-old granddaughter were killed when an out-of-control SUV jumped a curb

SUV: Watch this...what? You don't think I'll do it? Watch me! [Jump Curb}

a Ford Expedition roared onto the sidewalk and hit the woman and the two girls

"Police said the driver, Mirium Pierre-Paul, 24, lost control of the vehicle. She was not charged."

What's up with that? Lose control of your vehicle and kill two people and no charges? And yet get caught in an (unconstitutional, in my country or yours) sobriety road block with .02% BAC over the limit and you're instantly a criminal (assuming your lawyer can't weasel you out of it somehow in court). Nope, holding people responsible for their actions is definitely a dead concept.

Here in the People's Republic of Park Slope, I've been yelled at by old hippies... "Why don't you drive something responsible???", when they see me in my 1994 Explorer. Hell, around here, I've also been called a "Warmonger" for wearing an USNA sweatshirt. My standard reply is an upturned middle finger, followed by a hearty ' HOO-YAH"!

Was this SUV named Christine? Remember the movie about the car with a mind of its own.

If it were a Yugo, this would be a non-event. The grandmother would have been at fault for sitting too close to the curb, and the driver would be dead, too.
Still, it's a really sad story. The SUV could have been a bycycle for that matter.

I hate to be picky about such things, but Newton's 2nd Law isn't the killer here. Momentum, being defined as mass times velocity, is.

This is why, among other reasons, I drive a compact.

Because you have suicidal tendencies?

The SUV is not to blame, the driver lost control. Unless the car had a mechanical malfunction of some sort. Why blame SUVs? Is Rush an enviro whacko and upset over the gas they use? He should share, he has enough gas to fuel the entire nation!

I watched a nice mid-90's Vette jump a curb yesterday, almost into a retention pond. Hopped it like a sled. Maybe they should ban SUV's and sports cars.

Now you done it! Never admit to having anything in common with a greenie on the FR. I drive a Trek as much a possible myself.

Transformers were far superior.

Mainly because they were more than meats the eye.

Transformers.
