Crack user winning battle against corrosive work habit

Office habit: hard to kick

LONDON - Crack user Paul Maloney, 28, said he had finally kicked a work habit that he has struggled with for the last five years. Maloney, who used to be found at his place of work as often as three or four times a week, said he had not worked for three months.

"The last time I did paid work was 12 weeks ago. I'm still counting the days and not taking anything for granted."

Maloney described to herdofsheep how the debilitating attachment to work first took hold.

"To begin with, you go the odd day without nicking stuff, and you think - it's just a one-off, and you can handle it," Maloney said.

"But the next thing I had a suit and a work telephone number and a bank account."

"I don't know: it's like a disease and you think you can deal with it but you can't."

Maloney said that sometimes his work habit left him no time at all to buy cocaine.

"I'd be in there until ten and then that would be the whole day gone, and nobody to score off."

"I really hit rock bottom then."

Maloney advised others not to pretend they could cope with regular paid work. "This idea that you should work and get paid money so you can buy things: it eats right into your fucking mind and you can't get it out."

Maloney had managed to kick the paid work habit, and was now funded entirely by government benefits or crime.

"Sure, I won the battle. But the war goes on. Once you've had a work habit once, you're always going to be vulnerable to starting up again."

LOL, one of my favorite things to say to certain friends about myself is "work gets in the way of my social life".
