NYC on Alert for Emergency Vehicle Car Bombs

N E W   Y O R K, June 20 — Police and fire officials in New York are being warned that terrorists may be trying to acquire surplus or replica emergency vehicles to use as car bombs that could be planted near government buildings or landmarks without drawing attention.

A law enforcement source confirmed a report in The New York Daily News today that officials were alerted to the plot when two unidentified Middle Eastern men tried to buy a replica ambulance at a northern New Jersey shop that builds copies of emergency vehicles, police cars and fire trucks.

The owner of the shop became suspicious when the men tried to pay cash, and the pair fled without leaving any identification, the source told the News.

"This is a real concern. Terrorists have used ambulances to sneak suicide bombers into areas," the souce told the newspaper.

Among the sites officials fear could be targeted are City Hall, FBI offices, police department headquarters and even fire department facilities.

Fire department and police investigators have already begun efforts to ensure that unauthorized people cannot gain access to facilities where emergency vehicles are stored or repaired, fire department sources told the News.

"We've been told to watch our vehicles, all our vehicles," a fire department source said. "It's the vehicles that can get into areas that we are really concerned about. Who is not going to let a patrol car pass, or an ambulance, especially if we are in a state of emergency?"

The alert comes as the city is gearing up for July Fourth festivities, which generally draw huge crowds to fireworks displays around Manhattan.

somewhere in the Middle East there are villages missing their resident idiot

Not really -- remember the government employee to whom Atta paid a visit to get a government loan to buy a crop duster? He talked about putting a larger chemical tank in the plane, ranted about slitting people's throats, wanted to buy an aerial view of D.C. on the wall, returned disguised as someone else, and was thoroughly insulting to her because she was a woman.

What did she do? Nothing. She was concerned about helping him integrate into American society. I don't think she's atypical -- the owner of this New Jersey shop is.

As long as people like the government employee exist, they'll keep trying, no matter how stupid it may seem -- besides, there's more than enough people out there who'll do anything for money, and the terror slimes have plenty of that.

Not familiar with the Katherine Smith case, but if I remember correctly, one of Budiman's buddies in Virginia wound up in an alley with a bullet in his brain...

Either way, I did think about protection measures right away, because of the chance he could ID them again. I'm sure the feds are keeping an eye out.

It's just flat-out scary to think we are being attacked from within during these insane years of PC!!! When Clintoon was reelected, it became most clear to me how truely apathetic our nation had become. It's even more scary to think of what atrocity will have to occur in order for the US to take offensive action. I am sooooo damn frustrated with the apathy! It makes me feel like the folks here on FR are the only proactive clear thinking people around.
Regards to all,

There are still way too many office buildings where you can drive right into a parking garage or loading dock.

Yeah. And it's not like they haven't already succeeded twice in blowing up buildings in the US through the use of ordinary vehicles being driven into or near buildings.

Someone should ask Mayor Bloomberg if he still thinks racial profiling is a bad idea...

That was a weird post...

We don't know where the "Arab looking" men come from. Whom do we bomb? They tried to buy it in New Jersey...do we bomb New Jersey? Beyond imposing martial law....which would go over like flatulance in a church....the government seems to be doing the right thing, at least in this case.

Maybe the owner should have lead them on a bit until they could be identified and investigated.

Let me just say this, I am Republican who voted for Bush -- and nothing would make me happier than to admit to anyone who'd care to listen that I was wrong in not giving Bush more slack. Mr. Bush, I'm getting down on my knees and begging you to be a man, to be a patriot -- PLEASE defend our beloved country before it's too late!

Me too.

Simple solution BAN middle easterners from coming to the United States and deport the others. This touchy feely political correct crap is going to get more people killed.
