If you read the press conference notes carefully, there was an initial description given by Mary Katherine, that is what was broadcast. It took four formal interviews to get the information we have today. Police Chief Rick Dinse said that the hairy hands and arms details wasn't known until Saturday, June 15. And this is my supposition, that the police did believe the intial description was correct, and they only realized that it wasn't last Saturday.

Dinse didn't give an exact timeline, but Mary Catherine has been interviewed formally four times between June 4 and June 15. The police have also talked to her kind of informally, he said that they took her on a ride through the neighborhood (and he wouldn't say what they discussed.) So the fault is not with the police, it is with my notes... :)

For the first time, I think that Edmunds is involved. I think the police are purposely putting out false perp descriptions, to lull Edmunds into thinking he is definitely not a suspect. The fact that he is still at large, makes it seem like he is on the run,not some petty criminal with outstanding warrants.I think if it was a family member or the milkman, they would have cracked by now. When the police said they had probably already interviewed the perp,it may have been to trick Edmunds into coming in. By describing him as a witness, it might be to insure that no one would use deadly force to capture him, as they want him taken alive. When the Captain said that they thought the kidnapper was still in Utah, something clicked.
