New Zogby Poll: Mexicans Say Southwest U.S. Belongs to Them; Shouldn't Need Permission to Enter U.S.

WASHINGTON, June 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Americans and Mexicans have widely divergent views of border issues, according to a new poll by Zogby International. Zogby found that a large majority of the Mexican population believes the southwest territory of the U.S. rightfully belongs to Mexico, and that Mexicans should have the right to enter the U.S. without first obtaining U.S. permission. By contrast, Zogby's survey of Americans conducted within a few days of the Mexican poll shows a large majority supports reducing immigration levels and wants the military deployed along the border to protect the U.S. from illegal immigration.

Zogby's poll found that 58 percent of Mexicans agree with the statement, "the territory of the United States' Southwest rightfully belongs to Mexico." Only 28 percent disagree, and 14 percent are unsure. A similar majority, 57 percent, agree with the statement, "Mexicans should have the right to enter the U.S. without U.S. permission," while 35 percent disagree. Seven percent are unsure.

The survey has a margin of error of 3.5 percent. The Mexico portion of the survey was conducted in Spanish between May 25 and May 26 among 801 adults chosen at random throughout Mexico. The poll was commissioned by Americans for Immigration Control, Inc. (AIC), which advocates increased restrictions on immigration.

"There is obviously a large and significant gap between the attitudes of Americans and Mexicans," said Robert Goldsborough, AIC president. "While most Americans want immigration reduced, most Mexicans think they don't even need permission to enter our country. The poll clearly shows there is less common ground for immigration negotiations between Mexico and the U.S. than the leaders think. Support for a porous border and a loose migration policy occurs only on the Mexican side, not in the U.S."

Zogby's survey of American attitudes found wide majorities of Americans also oppose amnesty for illegal aliens. The U.S. portion of the survey was conducted of 1,015 likely voters in the U.S. from May 28 to May 30. It found that 65 percent disagree with the statement, "foreigners residing illegally in the U.S. should be given amnesty." Just 26 percent of likely voters support amnesty for illegals, while 9 percent are unsure.

A large majority, 58 percent, agrees that the U.S. should "admit fewer immigrants each year." Only 6 percent want "more immigrants each year," and 30 percent want to "keep immigration at the current annual levels."

The single largest majority in the entire poll was found among Americans supporting use of the military to guard the border. Fully 68 percent of those surveyed agree with the statement, "the U.S. should deploy military troops on the border as a temporary measure to help the U.S. Border Patrol curb illegal immigration." Only 28 percent disagree, and 3 percent are unsure.

Poll details and sub-group tabulations available on request.

Well, that settles it. We should conquer them and hold them as a colony. Suck them dry and throw away the husk. Sounds like a plan to me.

Maybe we should write off CA as a lost cause.

Should we also write off Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and the rest of the USA when the invaders show up there as well? I don't think so. Mark my word, they're doing quite well in taking over the Southwest, but then they'll be moving into the midwest and further out. What is our problem today in the SW, will be your problem tomorrow. Those of you in flyover country and beyond aren't going to like it either, and certainly will not suggest to just give up and hand it over.

Next thing you know, the Palestinians will be demanding that Israel return all the land won in the '67 war...

RepublicRats are the major supporters of the Mexican Invasion.

I'm glad you pointed that out to the original poster. We have a Republican in the top spot, and what is he doing in regards to illegal aliens? He wants to give them amnesty! Cheap labor and pandering for votes (that they will never receive) is what it all boils down to in the end.

In the first place the fact that "all"(in the sense of each and every one of them) Mexicans don't want the reconquista is irrelevant. It is what the small active minority wants coupled with the total inability of American office holders to effectively govern.

All major revolutions are carried out by 2% to 5% of the population. Examples being the American Revolution, The French Revolution and the Bolshevik Revolution. Most of those believing that the Southwest belongs to Mexico will provide passive support to the active fighters e.g. food, shelter, concealment and small amounts of money.

What are YOU talking about? I live in Texas and it is becoming just like California. At times I feel as if I am in Mexico. These people are invading this state by the millions and they are not assimilating and no one is doing a damn thing to deport their butts back to Mexico where they belong. It IS happening here in Texas, and nothing is being done by those with the power to stop it. Take a good look at California, because the same damn thing is happening here.

YOu are so right.

I was born in Texas and Texas is (or was) a state of mind. We were in Louisiana when I prematurely when into labor with my middle child. After being told by one airline I couldn't fly, I wrapped my coat around me and kept my mouth shut so my child could be born in Texas.

Now I find myself planning to leave this state, if it will hold together a little longer until we can afford the move. Since my husband is American Indian, we are going to move to Oklahoma - hopefully to make a place for our children and grandchildren.

Sorry you are only 1/2 right. They do come to work, but without the freebies, they would not come.

If they, like American citizens, had to pay for all their 'goodies' and if they had to pay taxes on their wages, they would be no better off than they are in Mexico.

Have you ever wondered how they manage to live here and prosper when American citizens on the same salary cannot? Think about it.

It is not because they are more industrious or thrifty, they just do not have to provide all the things citizens do with their salaries.

When push comes to shove, Americans will take up arms and settle things once and for all, if it becomes necessary to do so.

I see, and when exactly is this going to happen? When the last two white folks left in america are on the north pole?

Get real, we even have a president that can't wait to get the hispanic vote. They're gonna vote republican don't ya know.

We have tried with billions of dollars in foreign aid for many, many years.

We tried with the bracero(sp) program.

We tried with the previous amnesty.

We tried with NAFTA (yes, we were told that would end illegal immigration.)

Nothing short of taking everything our ancestors and we have worked for, will satisfy them.

NOthing will change in Mexico as long as we try to solve their problems. They must do it themselves.

"Mexico has always shared the same continent as Canada and the US, why are they still a third world country.?"

Wrong, they don't need freebies. Look at most third world countries. Up to 80% of their populations concentrate around their major metropolitan areas. None of these are welfare states as they could not afford to be. They are attracted because even the miserable existences in the slums are better than where they come from.

The US is the major international metropolis. Even if the job offered was the hourly minimum wage in a week rather than the hour they would come. That's still better than their wretched existence in the backwaters.

The gig is up and our borders are pourous with no way to patrol them or shut them down. Every industrialised nation is undergoing this pressure with few exceptions. Europe is well ahead of us and for them it's too late.

What is curious are the exceptions to the rule. Japan, Korea, both surrounded by impenetrable expanses of water. Hong Kong has always had an immigration problem that predates the Chinese takeover and continues unabated.

"Mexico has always shared the same continent as Canada and the US, why are they still a third world country.?"

The answer is very simple. Because in the culture of poverty the key to wealth is luck and birthright. They don not see the world as we do. To them wealth is not achieved through hard labor and sacrifice. In their view, the way to attain wealth is simply to take it from those who have. To them the pie is limited and they have the smallest slice.

It is a prescription used by socialist demagogues since day one. Unless you impact and change the culture nothing will change.

It is not because they are more industrious or thrifty, they just do not have to provide all the things citizens do with their salaries.

They ARE more thrifty: you CANNOT beat them to a good garage sale. They ARE more industrious: no meniality of a construction job is too menial. If they make all of 4.00/hr, living 10 to a two-bedroom, they're fabulously rich, comparatively.

I've worked side by side with them in residential construction in Central Texas- me an electrician, them, everything else. Their cheap labor has sustained the housing boom: absent the boom, I suppose they'll head back over the border when the INS decides it's -suddenly- time for some raids.

Unless, of course, they've gotten some seniorita in a family way whose offspring is now in public school - which is now formally bilingual, here in Texas. Said senora will pull down the equivalent of 20K/year in public assistance. She'll qualify for a doublewide on her assistance dollars. Being a homeowner, she'll also qualify for a new Chevy truck (happening at an astonishing gait right now) for her man. She'll qualify for considerable education loans which she'll use to pay down her consumer debt. She probably won't pay the education loan back, but the IRS will keep her annual 3000.00 earned income credit to satisfy it. She'll vote for Sanchez.

Many leftover spare male Mexicans not deported will wind up in jail, a very, very entrenched, much-privatized industry here. Incarceration provides their wives/dependents with even more state benefits.

So, in a sense, yes, the Southwest does belong to them, as long as public programs are funded.

SSSHHHH!!! Manifest destiny and all, it was our 'right' don't you know. Anyway, the issue I have with this is how the Mexicans would try to complete any type of secession from the US. Unfortunately, I don't think it will be done by the guidelines the Constitution offers under the 10th. And we all know Texas v White was a chump case overseen by a one issue SCOTUS
