The vaunted reorganization of the FBI is actually, in dangerous essence, a return to J. Edgar Hoover's COINTELPRO counterintelligence operation from 1956 to 1971. Attorney General John Ashcroft and FBI Director Robert Mueller are again unleashing the FBI to infiltrate, monitor and target lawful organizations and their members, or visitors

He just never had the figure for the latest fashions. I'm sure that he alway favored sensible styles, and never wore a heel higher then two inches.

While Hoover may have overreached in a few isolated instances, the overall thrust of the FBI was to be vigilant about the threat of communism.

If you are too young, too naiive, or too poorly informed to recognize the threat of communism, in THAT era, you'll perhaps buy into the Sen. Church nonsense, too. Sen. Church did his thing, as the US was retreating from years of embarrasment in Vietnam.

We face a new, not yet fully understood threat. If one feels secure enough, to wish to allow the enemy to meet, plot and plan in his mosques, that is naiive. Agencies need the tools, flexibility and support to protect the country. As we have witnessed in recent weeks, when they fail, they face justified outrage.

Other men wiser than me have stated the "Constitution was not intended to be a suicide pact." I am not a plotting terrorist. If the FBI calls on me, I have nothing to fear, for I am guilty of nothing.

Law enforcement is expected to do the job, and they need to have the means, methods to succeed. The last thing we need now, is to tie ourselves in knots, over whether or not to arm our forces, so to speak. Of course arm our forces.

Yes, but I'll be alive to fight. You will not be because you'd rather let terrorists blow up buildings than be inconvienced.

Hopefully if JEH is back he will finally get even with the Kennedys, whom he hated with a passion. It was Bobby who took him down.

"We don't have to go back to the bad old days when the FBI was spying on people like Martin Luther King."

Actually, Hoover and Robert F. Kennedy had serious and national security reasons to wiretap and spy on MLK because he was a Marxist-communist, he collaborated with U.S.S.R and Cuban intelligence. His advisors and financial backers were leaders in the American Communist Party, U.S.A. and much more is documented if one goes to the link below. The liberal NY Times admitted in 1991 that MLK fraudently received his "Doctorate", etc,. NAACP founder W.E.B. DuBois was a Marxist-communist and moved to Ghana in his later years.

But alas, we have guilty white Stupid Party republicans like Sensenbrenner ignorant of the historical facts and therefore eager to try and "get in good" with the guilty white liberal media. And for any that are interested in the facts, paste the link below or do a simple Google search.

The FBI's new surveillance and monitoring powers will accomplish nothing except to establish an infrastructure easily manipulated to target American citizens. The 9/11 terrorists were so careless in explicitly and publicly professing their intentions, that it's baffling the FBI didn't pick up on it. And now the FBI wishes to monitor every institution in society - for what? As long as the borders are open and the immigration system dysfunctional, the risk of terrorism will be as high as it ever was.

The FBI's new surveillance and monitoring powers will accomplish nothing except to establish an infrastructure easily manipulated to target American citizens.

Before the Church committee, it had the power you cite. Aside from a few highly publicized incdents, there were not widespread abuses. Indeed, most of the so-called abuses were in the pursuit of communists.

If you are too young, or too naiive, communism was a threat. It sought to infiltrate and spy.

In that case, the end justified the means. We won the Cold War. A few entertainers got tailed. So what. No harm, no foul.

Just being an American citizen, does not exempt one from "targeting." If an American citizen is the enemy, he deserves targeting.

As Sensenbrenner pointed out, there were abuses in the past, which should not be repeated. Espousing a radical political philosophy is not reason enough to monitor and track people. The only legitimate reason for monitoring is if there is evidence of illegal activity. Monitoring suspected criminals is fine, I have no problem with that. But that's not the FBI's new direction. The new FBI, if I understand what they're asking for, would broadly monitor all levels of society and attempt to filter out the terrorist communications wherever they occur. The problem with this approach is that it can be easily manipulated to collect information on innocent law abiding citizens. Sure, we have a friendly adminstration now, but what about when we have Gore or Hillary in the White House? Requiring evidence of illegality for monitoring would provide a check against this sort of corruption.

No, no, no, the FBI doesn't give diddly squat about us. But broad surveillance powers, with no restriction regarding evidence of illegal activity, is still dangerous.
BTW, I understand the tin foil reference, but not the kool aid one. Can you explain? Thanks.

BTW, I include spying for a foreign government to be under "illegal activities". But again, the broader the definition of spying, the more corruptible the system. There should be a narrow definition, for example, stealing state/military secrets, trespassing on government property, etc.

My Uncle was a FBI agent hired in 1935. He was very dedicated to catching the crooks, and spies. He told me several stories about spy cases in NY during WWII, and several kidnapping cases in the 30's. Until his death in 95 he had the upmost respect for Hoover. He felt Hoover instilled discipline throughout the ranks that kept all the agents on the straight and narrow.

He told me a funny story about getting transferred to a city in the South(forgot where). They only allowed agents to take 1 day off to find housing so he had his wife come and look until she had found 3 apts she liked. Then he took his day and they both looked. Of the three one really was great for the price and they decided to take it until the Reale Estate lady told him the apt had a real interesting history, it had been Alvin Carpus's residence. He had to backout because he said he knew Hoover wouldn't put up with a agent in Alvin's old residence.

He retired in 1965 because Bobby Kennedy had imposed a physical fitness program on the Bureau, he was 20lbs overweight. They gave him 6 months to loose it or they where going to send him to WVA to chase moonshiners around. He had his 30 years so he retired and spent his time investigating the family tree.
