Bush Approval Drops to Post-9/11 Low
But still high historically
by David W. Moore
GALLUP NEWS SERVICE
PRINCETON, NJ -- The latest Gallup poll, conducted June 3-6, shows that 70% of Americans approve of the way George W. Bush is handling his job as president, down seven percentage points from last week and the lowest level since the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11. The rating is still high by historical standards, and is 19 points above the level measured just prior to the terrorist attacks.

The new rating comes after a week of intense news coverage about what the Bush administration knew about the terrorist attacks before they occurred. Virtually all of the interviewing was completed before Bush's address to the nation last night, when he announced his proposal for a Cabinet-level Department of Homeland Security. The poll also shows that the decline in Bush's approval comes from Democrats and independents, but not Republicans. Forty-nine percent of Democrats express approval, down 10 points from last week. Independents show a seven-point decline, from 75% at the end of May to 68% today. Republican approval is at 96% in the current poll, off one point from last week but just above the average level since March.

Survey Methods Results are based on telephone interviews with 1,010 national adults, aged 18 and older, conducted June 3-6, 2002. For results based on the total sample of national adults, one can say with 95% confidence that the margin of sampling error is ±3 percentage points. In addition to sampling error, question wording and practical difficulties in conducting surveys can introduce error or bias into the findings of public opinion polls.

I'd like to see poll results taken after his speech on Thursday. I think they would be right back up in the 77-80 percent range.

There is only .05% who vehimently oppose Bush, that they all post 24/7 right here on FR. :o)

The day after Bush's latest speach the AZ Republic's front page was plastered with stories of the "investigation" and photos of the "whistleblowers" with Bush's pic on the bottom and a tiny mention of his speach. You would think that the largest restructuring of government in 50 years would have been the lead story, but you would be wrong.

Interesting. The Dim line and the Independent line are pretty much identical.A demonstration of the power of the propaganda wing of the left, the media.

A family member has political connections and when GW is coming to a locality for a fundraiser or personal appearance-everybody,but everybody, wants to come and see the President in person.Even Democrats will call for tickets. And afterwards,no one is disappointed, not only does the President connect with the audience in a warm and genuine way, but, he makes you so proud to be an American. After a few weeks of Rush's attention grabbing tantrums and dire warnings that Bush was losing his base-I called for their reaction. After checking-Rush was not registering on anyone's radar, in fact his rants may have shored up some support. You know how it is-you can criticize your own family, but when outsiders do it,you circle the wagons. I think the Dems and Rush cannot comprehend how completely and viscerally affected many were, by 9/11. The most important thing to them, is to have GW remain a strong and effective war president.

Expect the numbers to drop after the next terrorist attack.

For anyone who really wants to understand what a scam polls are (no matter who takes and publishes them) read "MOBocracy How the media's obsession with polling twists the news, alters elections, and undermines democracy," by Matthew Robinson, 2002, Forum/Prima Publishing.
A few nuggets from an excellent, well-researched book that is chock full of real-world examples:
- "Just because polling suits the needs of the media does not mean that representative democracy is better off for it. Just as we must be careful of the wording and methodology in any poll, so too must we be vigilant about how poll results are reported and portrayed...We must also question how and when polls are deployed, because the questions they ask are as important as the results they obtain...Many methodological factors can bias a poll or affect the results in subtle ways." (Bold added for emphasis.)
- "Using polls, journalists reason from effect to cause."
- "The media rarely police themselves and almost never acknowledge their own errors or mistakes..."
- "Media polls aren't just a shallower measure of opinion; they also often create the false impression that public opinion is settled."
- "Instead of challenging media stories or operating as just another source, polls are deployed after the shock troops of political accusation or media expose have hit the public..."
- "When it suits its purpose, the elite community of national journalists is quite capable of ignoring the polls it so adamantly presses in its own stories."
- "When the media conduct a poll that attacks...they stop being simple observers and become active agents."
- "Despite the media's seemingly careful attention to methodology and modern knowledge of statistics and sampling, polls today can be wildly misleading for a number of reasons, few of which are ever clearly explained to the public..."
- "Although journalists and political elites pay close attention to poll numbers and trends in opinion, a simple understanding of methodology casts doubt upon much of the reportage that purports to herald new voter trends."
- "The sad truth is, the polling industry doesn't know how to evaluate the accuracy of its results."
- "Polling is not a serene castle in the air that sits above the tumult of politics. It is not a neutral ground in political debate."
Note: I also posted this on the "The Coming Bush Landslide" thread before seeing this thread.

Well said, Wild Irish Rogue.
The Republican Party base, which means, the conservative base, remains in full support of President Bush. I think Rushes month long diatribe and the media`s, seemingly, endless rhetorical attacks against the President did pay off and caused his poll numbers to drop. Democrats and independents have listened and have been convinced, Bush isn't doing the job according to them. But with historically high, 70%-74% approval ratings, I wouldn't call that a failing presidency. I'd call that, a successful presidency. We shall see if the liberal strategy continues to work against Bush.

Expect the numbers to drop after the next terrorist attack. In the eyes of the media, the next attack will be Bush's fault.

The Bush spokespeople and surrogates are going to have to start taking the gloves off-the CIA "missed dots", happened on the Clinton/Reno/Freeh watch and that fact, was rarely mentioned. Occasionally, someone in the media would actually mention a date, in passing-but, it was never, ever said that this was a Clinton missed opportunity. Bush is being lumped in, with the intel failures of the Clinton era.The wish to not point fingers,is only operative from the Republican side. Pretty soon, I expect the media and Dems to start saying that it was Bush who bombed the aspirin factory.
To: Always Right
I frankly don't by a 7-pt drop in one week. Unless this was done before his speech the other night. Even then, I am a bit skeptical.
To: Reagan Man
Do you have any thoughts as to 'length of Bush's coattails' in the coming 2002 congressional and governor races?

To: Starwind
I don't know about Bushes coattails, but I do know, the closer we get to the November elections, Republicans have to get out among the public and speak up in support of Bush policies and the Republican agenda. And in kind, the President needs to get and show support for Republicans. This is a two way street. If you want to bewat the lib-dems, you've got to play hardball.
To: Jeff Chandler
In the eyes of the media, the next attack will be Bush's fault. And, by and large, they will be right.
What has happened since 9-11?
Terrorists are being held at Guantanamo Bay, being treated rather well, even though, given a chance, they would kill their jailors (us).
Pilots are not being given the chance to arm themselves.
The government has taken over the security of our nation's airports, making it near impossible to remove the incompetents (which is basically everyone).
We STILL have not sealed our borders.
The ACLU has blatantly interfered with our pursuit of terrorists, and yet, NONE of them have been arrested for sedition and/or treason.
We cannot stop and question any Arab in this country. Why? That is "racial profiling." What has the Bush Administration done in response? NOTHING.
Al-Queada still exists, and for all intents and purposes, Bin Laden is still alive.
For these reasons, there will be another terrorist attack on US soil, and more Americans will die.
I guarantee it.
And Bush will suffer dearly for it.

Is the newspaper firmly in the McC camp? That would explain a lot.
I notice our New York Post extremely critical of the president and am reminded that they were supporting McC for president.
Not that I believe in conspiracies, of course.......she said while adjusting her tinfoil headband!!!
To: Reagan Man
If you want to beat the lib-dems, you've got to play hardball. Agreed. Do you think Trent Lott is willing/capable?
