Peggy Noonan: Wake Up, Europe!
Opinion Journal ^ | 05/24/2002 | Peggy Noonan

Every big speech has a text and a subtext. When Ronald Reagan spoke at Normandy on the 40th anniversary of D-Day, in 1984, his text consisted of a remembrance of what had happened there on the beaches on that day in 1944. He spoke of the efforts of the English and Scots brigades, the Americans, the French; he lauded the U.S. Rangers who had clawed their way up to the top of the cliffs of Pointe du Hoc. "And in seizing back this soil," he said, as he stood on it, "they seized back the continent of Europe."

Noonan kneepad alert. She must be getting big bucks for her shameless Bush pandering. What else was Bushie going to say to Europe, after his new FBI director told Americans to get ready to be blown to smithereens, because we can't do anything about it, and Cheney said the terrorists have us beat and will kill millions of us with NBC warfare, and we can't do anything about it except spend gazillions of dollars on farm subsidies, and government programs to encourage marriage?

Meanwhile, this administration's forked tongue "support" for the Second Amendment only goes so far as the tarmac. Pilots of commercial airlines, take note. Bush trusts F16 pilots with air to air missiles to shoot your plane down, but heaven forbid you pilots might shoot a terrorist and save the White House by having a gun in the cockpit.

Bush sucks. Big time. How much does it take to buy you back, Peggy?

Thanks Pokey. I am glad I got to see the speech this morning. It was truly as Peggy said...an historic speech. God bless the President!

You know, Jesse, I am always impressed with your well-reasoned responses and your elegant turn of phrase.

My only quibbles are with his call for what sounds like more socialism for the Third World ---- and whether he agrees what's being perpetrated in Israel IS terrorism. His own Secretary of State told the world a pack of lies in his department's report the other day about the latter. Otherwise a great speech. I doubt though the Eurotrash will really get it.

Yep, she's a gem.

Look up appeasement in the dictionary...there you'll find a picture of the European continent.

In essence, they're cowards...always have been since, at least, pre WWII.

Peggy Noonan at her best.

She has few equals at hearing and understanding the music of a speech.

At the risk of starting trouble, and without seeking to be mean-spirited, I can't for the life of me understand the passion some FReepers feel for Ann Coulter. I like Coulter as a writer, and she's not a bad looking woman, but at fifty, Noonan is still one of the world's great beauties, and her writing is as lovely as her countenance.

With that said, she does at times fall in love with her own rhetoric, and confuse the strategic objective she is pursuing with the truth. Witness the following passage:

He reminds Europe that for all her pain she has been invincible. "From the Argonne Forest to the Anzio beachhead, conflicts in Europe have drawn the blood of millions, squandering and shattering lives across the earth. There are thousands, thousands of monuments in parks and squares across my country to young men of 18 and 19 and 20 whose lives ended in battle on this continent. Ours is the first generation in a hundred years that does not expect and does not fear the next European war. And that achievement--your achievement--is one of the greatest in modern times."

And so we know peace is winnable. We see this in the rise of the European Community, which is not seen by America as a rival but as living proof that "old hostilities" can be ended.

Europe isn't invincible; she exists, because America saved her. And the European Comunity/Union is a sign not of strength, but of weakness. The nation-states of Western Europe have lost all their vitality. They have not found peace so much as exhaustion, like the much-married playboy who becomes a "good husband" to his fourth wife, because due to advanced age and infirmities, he no longer has the vigor for fooling around.

The media's new tactic seems to be, if they cannot smear the President, they are going to ignore him. His trip and speech today, was given about 60 seconds on the nightly news and that was well after the Rock Creek updates. Ann is spicy and hot,Peggy is smooth and mellow, both are delightful.

Post #7 is the most assinine post I've ever read here. How ignorant.

Hey Jesse.. did you ever hear of CLINTON?? Do some reading, heck, do the math!!! 9/11 happened 8 months into President Bush's Presidency. Clinton was President for 8 years!! Gee, now whose "watch" did all the damage happen under?? Go figure!! (I mean that literally)

Well said! (Vets Husband and Wife!) Applause to you!

So glad I found this before retiring for this evening. Yes, indeed, President Bush has delivered clean on target speeches from 9-11 on (and his inauguration speech, as well - she forgot that one).

The media "producers/directors" will burn in hell one day for the damage they are doing to our country - first by ignoring the Clinton crimes and culpability for 9-11 and then by attributing Clintonesque crimes to President Bush...and hiding his splendid speeches and events from the American public.

God bless and keep our President! And, Peggy Noonan (and David Horowitz) and a few other priceless treasures of our nation!
