You can replace the word Cuba in his speech with China. I am curious when he will ask the Communist Party of China to hold free and fair elections.

I got to see only a couple minutes of it but he had the audience clapping and standing for ovations it seems. They seemed to be supportive of his points....

Lots of talk about freedom for Cubans.
No mention at all of
Elian Gonzalez.

I'm currently locked in an office a few miles from where this speech is taking place and have no access to radio. I did see him speak at two rallies in Miami during the 2000 campaign and the reception was strong from the largely Cuban-American crowd even then.

Extremely good speech, delivered with passion and conviction. Castro was challenged to show he wasn't afraid of elections.

Excellent, excellent. Hope the transcript is posted later. I will do it if no one else steps up to the plate.

I don't think he has enough time to mention each Cuban by name. Thus, the generic "Cubans." That would include Elian, IMO.

Wouldn't Elian be free if Cubans were free in Cuba? Just makes sense to me.....

Speech was Reaganesque. Abolutely fabulous speech. I cried, and I'm not even Cuban.

You can replace the word Cuba in his speech with China.

No you can't. Unless you are a utopian idealist who believes one standard can and should be imposed on every situation.

Thats not true. He mentioned several Cuban freedom fighters with their names. He should have mentioned Elian. He should have also replaced the word Cuba with China in his speech.

President Bush's challence to Castro to hold free elections reminded me of the speech of President Reagan in Berlin when he said "Mr Gorbachev tear down this wall".

All I am saying is that you could have replaced Cuba with China and the whole speech would have been consistent and true. I know what the constraints are with respect to China. The Chinese have a very well-organized lobby in this country. So do the Cubans. The Chinese govt and the Cuban dissidents have been able to organize. The Cuban govt and the Chinese dissidents have not. It is that simple.

Elian certainly be included if all Cubans were to have freedom, of course.

For Bush not to mention Elian to the very community in Florida that suffered through that hugely symbolic event, is to miss a huge opportunity to connect with the very community he hopes to rally. Believe me, I won't be the only one to notice this glaring ommision in the days to come.

So far it's appearing to be just talk to swing an electorate IMO.
