A woman who killed her lover with an axe told a jury yesterday she believed she had done "the right thing".
Janet Charlton, 36, said there was no other way of saving either herself or her four-year-old daughter Amy from the violence of Danny O'Brien.
"I thought he was an animal," Charlton told Leeds Crown Court. "He was mad. He would have done absolutely anything. I believe he was mentally unstable."
Charlton, who was giving evidence for the sixth day, said: "I have to live with this for the rest of my life. I know that the only reason I can is because I know I did the right thing. No parent would let someone do something to their child. There was absolutely no way I could let him."
Charlton said that when she first met Mr O'Brien he was "charming, kind and pleasant". But within weeks she realised he was an obsessive sexual pervert.
Charlton attacked Mr O'Brien, 42, with an axe at the couple's home in Midgeley, near Wakefield, west Yorks, last May inflicting 20 blows as he lay bound, gagged, handcuffed and naked.
She denies murder claiming she killed Mr O'Brien in self-defence after telling him she planned to leave him.
Prof Nigel Eastman, a psychiatrist, told the court that Mr O'Brien had used sexual violence both to control and punish Charlton.
He described Mr O'Brien as "abusive and profoundly obsessive and controlling". Despite evidence of battered wife syndrome, he did not believe Charlton had killed him because she was mentally ill.
The hearing continues.
