I went into a Bank of America branch here in S. California. I noticed that all of the tellers and clerks were oriental. I commented to the teller who helped me, "I see you have an all-oriental staff."

She was insulted. Drew herself up and hissed venomously, "An all-asian staff, sir!"

That was the first time I realized that "oriental" had become (overnight?) a pejorative.

They called me that in Del Rio, Tx, when I was in the Air Force there, in the late 60s and 70s. It is not new.
