the refrigerant itself runs in a closed system, 'tis true.
but the air drawn over the coils and blown into the house comes from outside.
if the stuff is 'live' outside, you'll be 'dead' inside ....

You are talking about a window unit, not a residential forced air system. In a window unit you have the ability to close off the outside air comming in and use the existing air in the house. The outside air that your picture showed is simply condensing the refrigerent before it gets circulated back to the inside coil.
