A professional society of wildlife biologists is investigating its members who submitted false samples of lynx hair during a national study to determine whether the actions violated ethical standards.
The Wildlife Society will examine the actions of three federal and state employees who submitted samples from captive and stuffed cats for laboratory DNA analysis. The lynx is listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act.

Where have you been? I haven't seen anything from you for a few weeks.
Those protocols prevent sloppy lab work, lab bias and protected the patent flows.
When ethics in government no longer exists how can you trust gov't studies? Up here in Alaska the state and fed fish counters are saying the salmon run is going to be miserable this year so there will be restrictions on sport and subsistence fishing.
If the gov't can't be trusted how do we know when they are lying to us? They could just say "no more fishing, hunting, building, farming, etc, etc" and how would we know?
Prosecute the bastards...give them jailtime. A review by their peers is a step below a slap on the wrist.

The real question here is: will these people be sanctioned by their peers? Or will wrists be slapped, harsh words huffily spoken, and counciling given to the perpetrators?
I'm not sure it matters any longer. These unethical biologists have actually done regular US citizens a favor by giving us a legal precedent upon which to challenge federal wildlife studies for years to come. The GAO says the validity of ALL federal wildlife studies has come into question on the grounds of this and other unethical behavior, and questionable findings based upon no supportable evidence.
If they are NOT sanctioned by the Wildlife Society, the biologists methods will not suddenly become either "justified" or "valid". Instead, the public will call the motives and ethics of all the current members of the Wildlife Society into question.

These people are activists in scientists' clothing.
It is encouraging, however, that this story hasn't died.
If the peers are other agendized pseudo scientists, there will be public wrist slaps and private kudos.
However, if they ever want to get a real job, their credibility has been permanently damaged.
I hope so, too.
It has been so far. Thomas is a supporter of the enviro-wacko movement and would have condoned the criminal acts of the biologists in question; not that there is much question.

Most likely a 'pink elephant', if you know what I mean.
Hiding, altering, destroying document that may be used in a judicial proceeding, whether civil or criminal, is also obstructing justice. If the documents are not produced, their absence must be construed to mean that the information contained in them is damaging to the government should any citizen or company sue the government for monetary damages. Government had a DUTY to be scrupulously honest with its citizens; something courts at every level have stated throughout the history of the United States.
