The part that kills this for me is the "two miles." Why would the US government have been digging 2 miles down? Do you know how much work and equipment it would take to work operate at that level? 10,000 feet below ground? Maybe 200 feet, but not 10,000.

Shaft depths there have been as far as 14,000 feet below surface - in hard rock instead of ice. Rock temperature is 158 degrees F at that level.
