Palestinian sympathizers in Europe and the Arab world called yesterday for the Israeli government to be investigated for war crimes, raising the prospect that leaders of the Jewish state could be among the first targets of the new International Criminal Court.

Obviously, this would set an absolutely ridiculous standard. Using this reasoning, the International Criminal Court could prosecute many of the American military personnel who participated in World War II because they fought back against the Germans and Japanese, who initiated the fighting.

You know, in a way, I am almost heartened by this call for war crimes trials against the Israelis. The Middle East has been a quagmire that has digested generations of peace plans, and so if it is seen as simply another pro-Arab forum for sniping at the Israelis, it will become as irrelevant as the UN General Assembly.
