The Immigration and Naturalization Service reassigned four midlevel employees today in the wake of the agency issuing visa approval notices for two Sept. 11 hijackers six months after they flew airliners into the World Trade Center.

The immigration commissioner, James Ziglar, said the breakdown that led to the notices being issued ``is unacceptable and will not be allowed.

Attorney General John D. Ashcroft also asked Congress today to give him back authority to fire INS employees for violating Justice Department rules. That power was not included in the current budget proposal. ``It is essential that I have the authority to quickly discipline or terminate individuals for acts of negligence, mismanagement or disregard for Department of Justice policies,’’ Ashcroft said

Until Congress changes the law.

The only way we'll see accountability restored within the Federal Government is by writing our Congresspeople and/or voting in Congresspeople who will recognize that government employees are in fact the servants of the taxpaying citizens of the United States - their sole function is to serve the nation and the nation's (genuine) citizens. I don't think the Bush administration has woken up to the fact that Clinton had 8 years to corrupt federal agencies and Gore had 8 years to "re-invent" the way these agencies operated.

The Democrats in Congress are not going to allow a Republican to fire their buddies. Gov't jobs have again become a party reward for a lifetime of "correct" voting.

We might be better under the spoils system than the career system.

How do you get fired?

No kidding. I'll bet dollars to donuts these four employees were members of a "protected class" and thus were merely transferred to prevent some representative from screaming, "____ism!" of one form or another.

If a blunder like this happened in the private sector, you can guarantee pink slips would be issued immediately.

Now. let's see.

The lynx fur "scientists" were "reassigned," not fired.
The INS terrorist "student visa" officials were "reassigned," not fired.
Union teachers who have sex with students are "reassigned," not fired.

General Motors does not "reassign" an employee who F's up big time. It fires him.
The Mafia does not "reassign" an employee who F's up, big time. It wacks him.
The US Army does not "reassign" an employee who F's up big time. It discharges him.

Add two more facts. The first three examples are all "public service" employees. And, the only part of the union momement which has not been in steady decline for the past 30 years is "public service" unions. Are we beginning to see a pattern here, folks?

The purpose of the "public service" unions is to keep those paychecks coming, even for employees who every day defeat the very purposes for which they were hired. The purpose of the Democratic Party is to protect those union members, because without the money extorted from them the Democratic Party would be squashed like a a cockroach in a corner.

Not just the Right Reverend Jesse Jackson's "organizations," but the entire Democratic Party, is one giant protection racket.

The Republicans need to do exactly two things. Replace Trent ("Notta") Lott with Tom ("The Hammer") deLay, and encourage George ("This is how it is") Bush to take the gloves off permanently, the way he did in this week's press conference on Pickering.

Do those two things, and Li'l Tommy Dashcle will be vut down to size. (Visualize Herve Villachaise saying, "De plane, de plane.")

Do NOT do those two things, and the internal rot of the entire federal establishment will continue its downward spiral.

? How do you get fired?

The only way a government worker can get fired is if they blow the whistle on government corruption.
