To truly understand nuclear strategy and deterrence, you have to make one tiny little leap of faith; you have to think the unthinkable, and realize that the rest of the world does not view nuclear weapons the whey we do. We view them as a horrible last resort; the CIS and China view them as the opening shot. Proposterous you say... read their warfighting strategy. They don't buy the myth of MAD. It only works if they allow it too; which they never have. The entire infrastructure of their military is set up to fight a WW3.

Go ahead, flame away. It is a lot easier to keep one's head in the sand. The truth hurts.... on this topic it hurts a lot.

This is the sadness of America's current strategic predicament, that NO ONE CARES. Football is still on Sunday. The sun came up this morning. The mall is still open. Gas is still pretty cheap. And Bush will take care of us, after all, he's a Republican. Nobody want's to make that little leap in the mind, to believe maybe just maybe the world is more complex than the Superbowl and Nascar.

We live in the most technologically advanced nation on earth. We have grown used to creature comforts and happy hour and a BMW in the driveway. Our ten year-olds have cellphones now. We have every concievable way to cheat aging, to defy nature, to enjoy our plastic paradise. And thus we refuse to drop our pompoms. Nobody can beat the Mighty USA, we have the technology to trounce anyone. Yep, we are invulnerable, nobody would dream of using nuclear weapons, they are just too horrible..... ZZZZZZZZZZZ

Please don't be too upset. Bush is just being Proactive. He is completely revamping the mitary forces. What is happening is a more adaptable and fluid force structure.

Instead of clinging onto the Margonot Line like France did in the 1930's, or hold on to the Calvary, like the Poles did in 1938, or using mass armor like Hussen did in Iraq,he is trying to adapt to the changes in the global weapon and threat structure.

Our military ig becomming far more dangerous and useful to the US interests than it ever has been before. Or, do you think that we need to have forced conscription?

"Look, lets just bug out and call it even, OK? What are we talking about this for?"

"Maybe you haven't been keepin' up with current events, but we just got our asses kicked, PAL"

"That's it man, game over, game over!!!"

Lack of hard target destroying capability is in our best intrests? News to me.

This isn't about upgrading, this is about a fundamental deficiency in our warfighting capability (where the F*** is our civil defence!)

Oh, wait, I forgot. Russia is our friend now! (weapons grade sarcasm)

More fluid, thats rich.... all this talk about bunker busting nukes is funny because Bush Senior DESTROYED THEM ALL! We are proposing a phony strategy to be fought with weapons we don't have. Do you have any idea how long it takes, not to mention the cost, to produce nuetron bombs? How about to cook new plutonium for triggers, tritium for the big boom? Because we aren't producing any.

What gives you the impression that we will completely lack any hard target destroying capability? I really doubt it. We are just changing the delivery methodology.

Really, pray tell the warhead upgrade, not to mention the new guidance system that allows the Trident to do the job of the MX. Fire protection and blast propogation is what I do for a living, do you have any idea the PSI overpressure it takes to crack a Russian silo. How about a command center, those new ones UNDER the Urals perhaps? How about the new way to track the Topol-M AFTER the VELA satellites get fragged with an upper atmosphere detonation?

Don't give me truisms about how the great savior Bush will makee-makee all better. Give hard data on HOW. I have done an enormous amount of research on this, I know the numbers involved. Refute with the like, if you can. Its not like I enjoy the knowledge that we are bending over and grabbing our ankles at a strategic level. Please, give me proof it ain't so.

Good article Mr. Headache, but one question I have is; Why would Russia and China use nukes, thereby rendering the land and resources of this country useless for years, when they could probably take over conventionally?

With their combined forces, they really have a big advantage over us. Now,our technology advantage would take up some of the difference, but that advantage is dwindling every year.

It is apparent to me the chicoms and Ruskies are all for this war on terrorism, and love it everytime a bomb or missile strikes it's target. It's another log off the ever shrinking pile.

"What gives you the impression that we will completely lack any hard target destroying capability? I really doubt it. We are just changing the delivery methodology. "

What gives me that idea? Well man, in theory, we could use the tridents for hard targets, provided they don't miss, and we use 2 or 3 in 30 minute intervals to "dig down" to said hard target. Which isn't going to happen. We simply don't have enough missiles. Not to mention the "stealthy-ness" of a submarine is gone once it hovers and starts popping missiles. That leaves one heck of a datum, folks.

There are no nuclear cruise missiles left in the active inventory.

There are no other delivery systems availible.

S.A.C. no longer exists.

There are no nuclear capable aircraft on alert. Nor are there any "cold-padding". In other words, the bombers get caught on the ground in a pre-empt.

Minuteman is a 60's era system. Glue and patches. It was originally designed as a city-buster. It's not that much more accurate than it used to be, nor is it at all hardened against emp. It's doubtfull whether the missiles would even work after an emp burst, let alone guide to a pinpoint location on the other side of the earth. It will not work.

The CIS has a fully functional ABM system. Currently the only viable leg of our "nuclear triad" is the missile sub/ Trident II system. Our subs do NOT have nuclear cruise missiles. In other words, we've got a 22, the possible enemy has a 12 Gauge , and we just thumbed the hammer forward on our gun.

Sleep Tight..

I think any value this country has to offer re: resources, land etc. is offset by the fact that a conventional war on US soil is unwinnable. Think the 10 million hunting rifles, we would slaughter them, every blade of grass would have another sniper behind it. Then factor in the vitriolic hate for us that nobody wants to think about.... Americans aren't popular around the world. You thought the WTC attack brought it out, think of the partying from Beijing to Moscow to Capetown to... Paris. The world would LOVE to see us suffer. And they intend on doing so.
