[history]
A controversial educator campaigning to head the state Board of Regents supports ebonics and a bizarre belief that blacks are more susceptible to drug addiction because of their skin pigment.
Regent Adelaide Sanford, who is black and has been quoted as saying white students were not her "agenda," has been an ardent supporter of ebonics, or black English, a form of slang that gained notoriety when it became part of the curriculum in Oakland, Calif., in the '90s.

"There are people who asked me to run" for state chancellor, Sanford told The Post. "That has happened." Shouldn't that be "There are people who aksed me to run...?"

Post something like this, and a couple of dozen FReepers will be laboring under the illusion that they are the individual reincarnations of Mark Twain in their replies.

A friend of mine and I were talking about this a few weeks ago. We were wondering how some the leading African-American chatterers would feel being interviewed by the next generation of journalism students when they get their own cable TV shows in ten years?
"Yo, Mr. Conyers, let me axe you a question -- what do your homies think about..."
This is what will happen in 10 years if this isn't stopped now.

(Former)Chancellor Rudy Crew, who is also black, torpedoed ebonics because, he said, "The proposal argues for a lesser set of expectations - almost to accept that African-American children can't attain skill levels in use of the English language." Amen, Brother Crew. Raise those expectations!
I'm reading "Cane River," by Lalita Tademy, a high-achieving black woman and former vice president of Sun Microsystems. Her novel is based on her family's rise from slavery to success from 1843 to 1955. A fascinating and well-written book about an intelligent and hardworking family, naturally an Oprah Book Club choice but don't overlook it because of that.
In the book, Tademy talks very frankly about the prejudice "white" or "yellow" blacks have against their "brown" black friends and family members. They're extremely color conscious. I wonder whether the Ebonics proponents are making their own statement of color prejudice...???

She told a panel discussion on ebonics in 1997: "I submit we have a right to self-define ourselves. Our children come from ghettos, where they live in racial and social isolation." And, if they continue doing the 'bonics thang, they'll always be isolated.
