Yes, fusion is the dream power source. But evidently even if true it will be a while before it can be developed commercially. Fifty years is mentioned, although frankly such predictions are seldom accurate. There could be other breakthroughs.
If this is true, which remains to be seen, it will be one more instance of dogmatic scientists jumping on anyone who upsets their cosy club.
The first group from Utah couldn't replicate their own experiments. Other scientists were right to jump on them. If you can replicate these experiments, then this is science, not a hunch.
