Bowles Nixes Clinton From Resume

Apparently North Carolina Senate candidate Erskine Bowles is now embarrassed by his connection to the Clinton White House, where he served as chief of staff from 1996 through 1998.

In the pamphlet touting his credentials to voters, "Bowles boasts of his work balancing the federal budget and leading the government's response to the Oklahoma City bombing. The brochure, however, does not include a single picture or word about his old boss Bill Clinton," the Associated Press reported Thursday.

On the campaign trail, Bowles talks about his work at the White House and Small Business Administration, but references to the impeached chief executive are few and far between - even though it was Clinton who hired Bowles for those jobs.

And often, whatever allusion he makes to his former boss isn't particularly complimentary.

"What he did was wrong," said Bowles, who had to grit his teeth and wince his way through the Monica Lewinsky scandal. "At the same time, I'm very proud of what we accomplished I make a distinction between his personal failings and the honor I had to serve my country."

A Bowles spokesman told the AP the campaign "hasn't decided whether to invite Clinton down to help."

The calculation that the Clinton connection does more harm than good seems more than warranted by North Carolina's voting record, where residents backed the GOP presidential ticket in the last three elections. Bowles' likely opponent is Liddy Dole, whose husband trounced Clinton there in 1996.

But even in other races, the Clinton association is a mixed bag at best.

Massachusetts gubernatorial hopeful, former Clinton Labor Secretary Robert Reich, has yet to invite the former president to campaign with him.

"This race is about Robert Reich and the state of Massachusetts, not the former president," campaign manager Mark Longabaugh told the wire service.

Even former Clinton Attorney General Janet Reno, who often boasts about her role in such controversies as the Elian Gonzalez fiasco, has yet to ask Clinton to help.

In more liberal Chicago, Clinton isn't quite the liability he is elsewhere. Windy City congressional hopeful, former White House advisor Rahm Emanuel, has had him headline two fund-raisers.

It doth appear that Mr. Irksome Bowles no longer finds X42(i) very useful. Considering Irksome's long-rumored ties to the labor onions and organized grime, this is interesting.

Since all of these folks seem to want everyone to forget their association with Clinton, perhaps the folks in NC, FL and MA should get themselves lot of stickers with a photo of Clinton. Then, every time they see a Reno, Reichhhh or Bowles campaign poster, just stick a little Clinton to it.

Sorry, Erskine, but you lose. You had your chance at the time to say something about a rapist sitting in the Oval Office. You had your chance to say something about the technology sold to the ChiComs. You had your chance to say something about the chief law enforcement officer trying to fix a federal sexual harassment trial. It's now much too late. It's too late for all of you b*stards.

Mr. Bowles, his "personal failings" that you repudiate include, but are not limited to, perjury, subornation of perjury, obstruction of justice, fraud, theft, and treason.
