Police: Break In Missing Girl Case Soon

A high-ranking San Diego police official said in remarks published Friday that he is confident there will soon be a break in the case of missing 7-year-old Danielle van Dam.

"We will solve this case sooner rather than later," Assistant Chief Steve Creighton told The San Diego Union-Tribune. "We have a ton of evidence that we are meticulously going over. We are making progress."

Creighton's remarks were published only two days after police, for a third time, searched the home of David A. Westerfield, who lives just two doors from the van Dam home.

Police refused to say what they may have found in the home of the 50-year-old, who has been the focus of the investigation into what police say was an apparent kidnapping.

Twice before, detectives took service dogs through Westerfield's house, and he has been under 24-hour police surveillance in the days since Danielle's disappearance.

In addition, Westerfield has submitted a sample of his DNA to authorities for analysis.

During the initial searches, officers carted off boxes and bags full of household items. Police also impounded his sport utility vehicle and the motor home he took to the Imperial County desert over the weekend the girl vanished.

Still, authorities have referred to the neighbor only as a "potential suspect" and have not taken him into custody.

Danielle's father, meanwhile, said he plans to join concerned citizens in scouring arid wilderness areas around Glamis, Borrego Springs and Ocotillo over the Presidents' Day weekend.

The search for the girl has included those vast open areas because Westerfield took a trip there around the time Danielle vanished.

Brenda van Dam said her husband's plan to help comb those wastelands was helping him cope with the ordeal of his child's disappearance.

"You know, it's harder for me to have to stay here in the house. But I know that's what I have to do, just in case I'm needed by the investigators," she said. Rewards offered in connection with Danielle's disappearance now total $185,000. Some are offered for her safe return. Others are payable in the event of an arrest and conviction.

I don't know about this man either, except that they apparently found a good deal of child porn when they did their search. On the other hand, I've read articles where his friends emphatically state he could not have done such a thing--but whose friends ever think they are capable of such things? I know my view is not a popular one (at least on some threads), but I can't help but think that the parents' lifestyle played a part in this, but whether a large or small part, I guess time will tell.

The mother's words would cause the "deception" alarm to go off in the head of even the least-experienced investigator on this case. Polygraph testing of both parents is sure to follow if such has not taken place by now....

Thanks, lady reaper.

Rick Roberts will broadcast today from 3 to 7 on KFMB 760 with "Danielle van Dam - The Inside Story".

This will directly compete with John and Ken who will be on at the same time and will be live from the Sabre Springs area.

Both programs should be interesting.

One of my son-in-laws is an LEO in one of the city PDs in San Diego County. He has quite a few friends who work for city departments throughout the county. Without revealing anything yet unreported to me, but having talked with fellow LEOs, he suspects neighbor AND parents.....FWIW.

I think they have something to hide.........period. Even if they are not found to be responsible for Danielle's fate, they are possibly guilty of other crimes.

My sister MRSLIBERTY told me the mother mused after or before her first appearance on Larry King that she wondered
what the Ramseys got on their book deal. Not sure where she got that scoopo.

If you are going to repeat my "scoopo", get my name right. Mrs.Liberty.

I cannot remember back, but it might have been John and Ken or a local, Rick Roberts.

They have taken polygraphs according to some accounts--and passed them. However, if I recall correctly, the lady who drowned her children passed at least one, as well.

I think that maybe the parents allowed her to be used for child pornography and then something got them all worried that it would be discovered. I can't speculate on who did what, how or why but there has to be something very tangled beneath the surface of this tragedy.

After all.....we hear about child pornography a lot and these young children have to come from somewhere. I'm just guessing that perverted people (if true) would be a likely source.

I do agree that this might be possible, but I hope it doesn't turn out to be the case. I can think of few worse things than betrayal of one's own children.

You and me both. I will never understand why most of us would die in place of one of our kids, while a few can actually take their own child's life.

I can hardly stand to think about it.

Don't know about the child pornography. Anything is possible these days.

The parents are focused on NOT talking about their "swinging" lifestyle, saying it is their business alone, and should not have any bearing on the case of the Missing Daniele.

OTOH, if the Mother picked up 4 people at the bar and woke her husband to participate in the party...then we go down another path. WHO were the people in the house? Alcohol or Drugs involved?

A horrible scenerio might be someone tried to involve the little girl in their sex games, and she somehow died. I know, it is far-fetched, but something happened to her.

Let's not forget that Gary Condit was linked in every way to Chandra Levy, but there is no body, so he is a free man.

I think people who participate in this kind of garbage may be capable of going wherever their perversion takes them. It's far-fetched to most of us, but maybe not for them.

Personally, I think a person who doesn't honor their own wedding vows isn't going to honor much else, either. I know someone will doubtedly show up stating what fine, upstanding citizens "swingers" are, but I think you are right: it's not that big of a leap from one perversion to another. I hope none of this turns out to be the case: a child looks to his or her parents not only for love, but also protection. It's the worst kind of betrayal when a parent causes harm instead of offering love and protection. (The story about the Houston mother who chased down, then murdered, 5 of her children just floors me. I just can't imagine what hell those wee ones went through.)

False-negative polyraphs are not uncommon among sociopaths who are tested.....

I am tormented to even think about it. The parent-as-the-perpetrator stories are the saddest to hear. Unimaginable !!!!!!!

The little girl's Mother is truly a beautiful and apparently wonderful woman.

Sorry but this "wonderful" woman has admitted to being a "swinger"
along with her husband and was probably engaging in some "fun & games"
with the main suspect while her children slept upstairs!
