Not much. Too bad they aren't giving you a PocketPC like a Compaq iPaq or something.

If you have to keep a schedule it is much better than a Dayrunner(tm) book. It can give you alarms but you will need to get Hackmaster and 3AlarmHack to make them audible.

It can do games, ebooks, scientific calculations, email, spreadsheets, you name it there is a program for it.

I gave up on a palm pilot. Too much of a hassle. I just periodically print my PC contact list and print it off onto daytimer paper. Donate it for the writeoff or eBay it.

Oh, I forgot to call the Tech Index FReepers in.

I haven't had the chance to try Pocket PC yet, but Palm Pilots are very versatile and can do more than the original IBM PC ever could.

Well, if you get one of the Hand Spring versions that run Palm OS, you can make a "fluke" out of it..

You can impress babes by poking it with the pen and making mysterious mumbly type noises while dressed in a three-piece suit with a power tie.

Things like "Big Blue, up a quarter... Need a few million more shares..."

Take the Palm Pilot, download ThinkDB (Think Database) - it's freeware as long as you don't use it's companion desktop version - learn how to use it, and you'll be in hog heaven!

Dang handiest gadget and program I use.

Also, look at www.palmgear.com and www.palmtracker.com for lists and descriptions of thousands of programs you can run on Palms.

Still, ThinkDB, once you get proficient with it, is incredibly versatile and useful.

I traded in my hefty daytimer for a palm pilot last year.
Although i miss being able to see everything at a glance, I DON'T
miss that dead weight in my bag. However the software that you
download for it gives a very nice screenview of the schedule ahead.

The question is whether you want to become a "Palm Pounder" and how your significant other will accept it!! At least thats what Master Bates was up to.

You can go to AvangGo.com, get their free software and read all sorts on online newspapers on your Palm. Whenever your Palm syncs with your desktop, it can transfer news articles from the web as well as all of the other items like contacts and schedules.

Sidebar question to the forum:
Any good software out there for the Palm (etc.) to make it good as a
1. device for learning new languages, e.g., even just as a flash-card vocabulary machine
OR
2. software to make your own flashcards on a Palm.

My digital cellphone has a phone book w/ multiple entries for each name, a calculator, and a daily calendar with audible alarms. Plus it receives email from my wife without using minutes. Doesn't seem a Palm does much more than that AND be able to PHONE HOME.

Well, either you love 'em or you hate 'em I guess. Myself, I couldn't manage without it. (Though as soon as the Ericsson R480 phone/pim is available in the US, I might switch.)

Killer aps for moi: calendar and contact sync. with ACT! officewide database. I've got the network version of ACT! set up for the office, and generally, first thing in the AM will sync. my palm with the office schedule. Thus, I'll know where all of my layabout employees are supposed to be, and my own crazy schedule is clear to all as well. This is massively cool.

The contact sync. is more useful than it sounds, since the contact list tends to be a rather dynamic database in times like these.

e-mail: This is probably the most important app. With the Palm VII (which I use), this is integrated. With the model you reference, you'll need your cell phone, but nonetheless, staying in touch via e-mail beats voicemail and messaging by a mile.

I love my PalmPilot. I chucked my Franklin Covey dayplanner. It can keep all of my contact stuff on it, calendar for me. Plus there are a whole bunch of cool applications for it. I downloaded the Bible to it, very handy for reference or reading. Plus you can play games on it (Tetris) at very boring meetings.
