Vanity: What can one do with a Palm Pilot?

This is a pure unadultered vanity. If you're not into computers or Palm Pilots, skip this thread. You've been given fair warning.

I won a sales contest at work and can choose from three prizes, one of which is the Palm Pilot M505. In the past, I've shyed away from Palm Pilots, not seeing a practical use for them in my lifestyle.

Now, that I can get one for free, I'm re-thinking it, since the other two prizes I either have or I'm not interested in.

How do you use your Palm Pilot? What are the most valuable things you do with yours? Do you need accessories? If so, which? What are the pitfalls or problems with the Palm Pilot?

Not much. Too bad they aren't giving you a PocketPC like a Compaq iPaq or something.

If you have to keep a schedule it is much better than a Dayrunner(tm) book. It can give you alarms but you will need to get Hackmaster and 3AlarmHack to make them audible.

It can do games, ebooks, scientific calculations, email, spreadsheets, you name it there is a program for it.

I gave up on a palm pilot. Too much of a hassle. I just periodically print my PC contact list and print it off onto daytimer paper. Donate it for the writeoff or eBay it.

I haven't had the chance to try Pocket PC yet, but Palm Pilots are very versatile and can do more than the original IBM PC ever could.

Take the Palm Pilot, download ThinkDB (Think Database) - it's freeware as long as you don't use it's companion desktop version - learn how to use it, and you'll be in hog heaven!

Dang handiest gadget and program I use.

Also, look at www.palmgear.com and www.palmtracker.com for lists and descriptions of thousands of programs you can run on Palms.

Still, ThinkDB, once you get proficient with it, is incredibly versatile and useful.

I traded in my hefty daytimer for a palm pilot last year.
Although i miss being able to see everything at a glance, I DON'T
miss that dead weight in my bag. However the software that you
download for it gives a very nice screenview of the schedule ahead.

You can go to AvangGo.com, get their free software and read all sorts on online newspapers on your Palm. Whenever your Palm syncs with your desktop, it can transfer news articles from the web as well as all of the other items like contacts and schedules.

Any good software out there for the Palm (etc.) to make it good as a
1. device for learning new languages, e.g., even just as a flash-card vocabulary machine
OR
2. software to make your own flashcards on a Palm.

My digital cellphone has a phone book w/ multiple entries for each name, a calculator, and a daily calendar with audible alarms. Plus it receives email from my wife without using minutes. Doesn't seem a Palm does much more than that AND be able to PHONE HOME.
