Members of Green Beret team Tiger 03 spot Taliban targets for U.S. warplanes.

The soldiers operated largely in secret, with little direct support or supervision. They wore long hair and beards, lived in unmarked compounds and moved mostly at night. They called in airstrikes from hidden bunkers and shallow trenches, dodged artillery and mortar rounds and, when necessary, traded shots with Taliban soldiers across the frontlines.

"A tall, wiry man, John reads every day from his pocket-sized, green leather Bible and displays remarkable patience when dealing with local village leaders demanding more supplies."

Sounds like something out of Sgt. York. To God be the glory.

Psalm 23
[1] The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
[2] He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
[3] He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
[4] Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
[5] Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
[6] Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

What a great piece! Thanks for posting it!

Proves once again...there is nothing more dangerous than a radio...especially when the guys on the other end drive airplanes for a living!! ;-)

May God continue to bless and keep our troops.

"So while I'm extremely proud of the awesome accomplishments of our troops, and the fact that they "blended" in so well and assisted (with great peril) the efforts over there,. I'm sure their mission isn't done yet. I mean, this didn't come from the Pentagon, but from a news outlet right? If one persons life is endangered because of stories like this,.. it won't have been worth it."

I agree totally with your point, however, you can bet the farm this info was poured over thoroughly before release.

God bless our troops.

Yes, these stories about Bible-reading hero soldiers are going to make the Democrats' plan to win in 2002 by demonizing the "religious Right" just a wee bit harder. I expect.

A treeless, desert landscape is ideally suited for this kind of warfare. A jungle in the Phillipines is not.

Why not? We were doing the same thing in Laos and Cambodia these guys are doing in Afhaganistan, and we had pretty good success there, too. Where do you think these guys learned their lessons from? Read John Plaster's "MACV-SOG,the Secret War of America's Commandoes in Viet Nam" and find out.

BTW,who do you think it was went into the jungle after Che'? Notice he hasn't been exporting much revolution for Castro the last 30 years or so?

Just a note about the Vietnam-era; 2/3 of those who served were volunteers.

I don't have to read about it. My uncle was one of those Vietnam Green Berets fighting with the Montangnards. Two combat tours. Two Purple Hearts. A h#ll of a lot of bullet holes in him.

What I mean by "this kind of warfare" is Green Berets and Rangers hiding out in desert terrain "painting" targets for the Air Force and Navy flyboys dropping JDAM's, achieving 5000 / 1 kill ratios and winning the war all by themselves while the rest of the U.S. Army watches the war on CNN and Fox News. That kind of warfare can only occur in a desert theater of operarations.

Jungle warfare levels the playing field due to the severely limited visibility. Very nasty surprises can be waiting for you 100 yards down the jungle trail when you can only see 10 yards in front of you. The limited visibility also severely limits the unit's ability to spot and "paint" enemy targets for their air power.

Special Forces units can have "pretty good" success in jungle warfare but nowhere near the "we won the war all by ourselves" success that the American public may now expect to be the norm in all future conflicts regardless of the terrain.

BTW,who do you think it was went into the jungle after Che'?
