Oh, I wholeheartedly agree with that view. However a trial would have brought unwanted attention to the actions of Chief Justice Chase, for surely Davis would have testified in his own defense, and the documentation that has been provided here many times on tax structure, would have shown that the actions of Chase not only helped to start the war, but to extend it as well

Yeah sure. The government would have let Davis put them on trial? In your dreams. As it was, Davis was allowed to finish his days in genteel poverty and well-deserved obscurity. And after the old boy croaked it didn't take Varina Davis long to make a bee-line to New York City so she could spend the rest of her days among the Yankees, did it?
